When I do general blog comments I leave my main URL as the address. One of these has resulted in 700+ links now pointing to my domain from one comment. Why/how has this happened?

i think because the website admin use ( Latest Comments ) Sidebar Widget
but i wish anyone tell me and you, is this can be harmful or not?

It happened to me too. But funny enough, I didn't notice any negative impact on ranking.

blog comment also one of the Backlink. so it will increase your RD

@VGR what is RD, how can I check the RD of the specific domain, i checked ahref, moz, majestic but dont know how to check RD

i) Blog commenting is the white hat technique.

ii) There are multiple people who are searching for the services which you are providing. If you will add the comment, it will provide the visibility to the users who are really in search of the service which you are providing.

iii) If you will read whole thread in the blog and replied accordingly then it's become the best strategy to engage the people in the conversation which used to attract the visitors.

iv) Many blogs allow you to include a website link with your blog comment. Making blog comments can help build links over time.

v) Blog commenting can bring direct traffic to your blog.

How would that generate multiple backlinks? I thought maybe because the blog I had commented on had hundreds of links pointing towards it but it only has one, so I don't know.

it generate multiple backlinks because your comment with your backlink appears on every page in the blog use the ( Latest Blog Comments ) Widget, take a look on the blog that you are talking about to be sure

I think I understand you now. So if the blog has 200 pages and that widget displays the latest comment on every page it counts as a backlink.

Yeah you got it now. That's happened with me also and it was near around 10k links :D:D You can do few things here like -

1. Simply ignore and see the impact.
2. Put some more comment so that your comment disappear from the widget (Depends if admin approve new comments or not).
3. Email the owner and request to remove the link.

off topic question :
Are you using a bot or you work manually ?

It's a relatively new site so I would have thought it wouldn't be a good thing, but as it's pointing to my main page and there isn't a lot of content on there anyway it's hard to tell if it's had a negative impact or not.

Just checked and it's happened again, this time almost 200 links pointing to another page on my site o_O

The comments? Manually, as I think this gets a better chance of comment approval and you can better control anchor text etc.
