Expired domain - opportunity?

A niche news/classified ads website (non-english) abandoned it's secondary domain.
To put things in perspective - main domain ranks for 1924 kw while the secondary (same content because of redirection) ranks for 260 kw.

The site is not heavily monetized through the ppc and it's not very well constructed so I don't think they made a well thought, strategical decision on this. Is there an opportunity here to pick up the expired domain? If so, what would you do with it?

The niche is very dense with ads as it involves trade of production materials.

The main question is what are the links to this domain. Assuming the links are good, you can do many things with it. Preferably just making a new site in the same niche as the original.

Maybe try to restore the original site and see how much traffic it gets? But as I understand it has same content through redirections, it probably won't rank very well.

If those pages aren't indexed, then it absolutely doesn't matter how many keywords it used to rank for. To achieve that rank it could have taken years. If you are okay with waiting for years and build additional links, then by all means, but rebuilding sites this way is not really worth it unless the content is indexed and jumps right back in after rebuilt.

Direct search with "site:domain.com" shows About 5,980 results. The results are listed with the said, expired domain.

Original site is still up, might cause a conflict with original owner.

There are some links. Enough for an expired domain to hold 15 out of 260 keywords in top 10 results. It's a very difficult market in my local google search: It does not take much backlinks to rank but it's extremely hard to get good authority links because there's not a lot of websites compared to global market.
