While the the fools learned about the riches buried in California, the real opportunists set up shop just outside of town. While the 49ers chase the dreams of gold, the hardware stores sold shovels and pans.

We should now use logic to know which side of the shovel got rich.

Another fun fact. There were three such opportunists: Lucius Lowe, Bernard Marcus, and Richard Hesse. They collaborated on a large hardware store concept selling shovels and panning materials out of the back of one large carriage to prospectors, instead opting to trade in return for a small percentage of any gold they find. After the gold rush ended and all three became extremely wealthy from the profits of this endeavor, as their "revenue share" had been ridiculously lucrative.

They went their separate ways and started their own brick and mortar hardware stores. 160 years later, all three have survived through crashes closures and more. They are now known as Lowe's, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware! Additionally, everything I just wrote is a lie.
