Wikipedia linking tool?

Maybe I'm missing something...why has no one written a tool that would crawl wikipedia articles (though proxies) and link specified keywords on wikipedia articles to a specified link? No text changes, just linking, or changing the link if already linked, on certain keywords. I could do something like this in a day. I don't want to bother if there is already something good out there.

I'm assuming there is a reason why no one has done this and there doesn't appear to be anyone using a tool like this (at least not aggressively) but I have yet to discover it. Am I missing something? I know that wikipedia editors hate spam...yada yada yada. Arguably this wouldn't even be spamming. One man's idea of a site that is worthy of linking to and relevant to a keyword is another man's spam.

Is there any interest in this? I'd be happy to post it here when finished...probably quick and dirty but free.

Actually, they do allow external links within the articles (just tested one on a major page). Second, I've read up on the nofollow issue and since wikipedia is considered so authoritative, the major engines (google, yahoo) still follow. Third, I'm not just talking about using it strictly for SEO, since many of the links on the most trafficed pages would admittedly die within hours/days (you could easily put them back though). It would be a great traffic source on major pages.

Anyway, I guess I'll just build it and use it myself. I thought maybe there was some clear legal hurdle that everyone besides me knew about, but I guess not.

reason i say that is becouse i tried posting a link for online poker with wikapedia they took it down with in minutes let me know how it works out for you

I think that creating a tool to create relevant backlinks on Wikipedia would be a marvelous idea. Like the OP said, they would most probably (unless you're ultra clever) get taken down *very* quickly, but could be used for some legit traffic for that short period of time.

The only problem is that if a program like this came about, it *wouldn't* be used responsibly, will ruin it for everyone, and will cause Wikipedia to close up the loop really quickly.

Such bot would be easy to program as far as I can see. But it would cause an unbelievable amount of heat I would not like to have. On the other hand, there are enough people who don't care, so I assume some basic show-stoppers are already implemented.
