Ok so I just found out I missed out on a possible $500,000+ booty because I changed my number for some time and isolated myself during that period.

My brother's friend from the university discovered a loophole in an sms lottery that was being run here. It works this way, you select 2 numbers from 1-49 and text it to a short number. Now you are charged $10 per message you send and you win $1000 if your two numbers are drawn.

This guy stumbled accidentally on a way to send the sms message to this short number and only be charged $1 per message. He always saved the numbers on is phone starting with a "+" in front ot the numbers. He thought it looked cool. Well he didn't know it was about to make hime rich. So he saved this short number which was say 1776 as +1776. So he realised that when he send the text message to +1776, he was only charged $1 per message instead of $10 per message.

Now let me do the math.

He can choose 2 numbers from 1-39.
so that gives a total of 741 possible combinations.
Now you win $1000 anytime your two numbers are drawn.
He had 741 possible combinations to garantee a win.
And he is only charged $1 per sms.
So 741 sms = $741
Now He wins $1000 so everytime he sends all 741 possible combinations, he wins $259!!

And the lottery picks 6 numbers per draw so you only had to get 2 out of those six and sending all 741 possible combinations, he wins multiple times per draw. So what did this guy did, he got some money and hired someone to write him a code that will make this possible combinations and just be basting his enteries into the lottery. The guy had his pc on all day sending enteries into this lottery. He was sending in thousands of enteries each draw.

To cut the story short, he and another friend of his managed to make over $500,000 each from this over a 6month period. And the freaking lottery company never caught on. They managed this before the secret finally came out. And my brother was frantically trying to get in contact with me so I can provide money so we get into it and I was no where to be found.

That's at least a $100,000 opportunity gone. Needless to say that loophole has been closed now and I'm sure the unlucky guy who programed the whole set up for the lottery company is out of job by now.

I had a feeling it could have been an insider job but then I believe the guy just got lucky.

Hey if you have something similar running in your country, you can try playing around with the sms number and see what happens. I'm still slapping myself hard in the face.

Yeah I know. That would have been some really easy money. Just power on the computer and go have fun. Come back and you have made a couple of thousands.

weird....

the "+" function in a mobile phone denotes international dialling prefix when you hit the send button.

Yeah but I use it with local numbers all the time and it works. Hey it made somebody rich.

wow, great story man.

i think ive seen these types of competitions on tv, not sure about cash prizes as i mostly see prizes like gaming consoles, ipods, laptops, iphones, etc.

This wasn't a competition, this was a lottery. Most lotteries carry cash prizes

And why would your brother need you to send sms of his phone? ;)

He didn't need me to send sms. He wanted the money to buy sms credits. You needed $xxxx to get it to work and he didn't have. he eventually managed to scrape together about $500 and worked it for 3days. He got $2700 before teh loophole was closed.

LOL. I deserved that. Don't know how much power he can punch though

Don't you think the people giving the money away would have caught on after a while?

Here's what you do, change that avatar and then I'll turn on my sympathy.

Well aparently, they did not catch on the the loophole lasted over several months. I guess it was basically inefficiency on the part of the lottery company. It was the national lottery company by the way and they were running the lottery with one of the biggest Telecom companies on the continent.

And they actually only caught on after the loophole was leaked to the public and people won millions and they were having problems claiming their money. The lottery authority investigated and found out about the loophole and closed it.

maybe its a blessing since you wont be going to jail.... just trying to be glass half full guy ;)

Have we a sympathy button???
Good idea yes?
Harro owes me 500 thou for the idea
Ill take an SMS

Hey man thats a missed opportunity
Joking apart Im sorry for you but as callmelucid says above might be a blessing

The owners of this lottery would have clearly noticed this loophole within the first week and closed it before $500,000 were given out.

You did not miss out on $500k, you probably missed out on the $2,700 your friend made and thats it.

Hey no one is going to jail for this. Seriously what charges can they label against you? they're system was not hacked or attacked in anyway. The guys played the lottery by the rules by simply following the rules.

Um maybe you didn't read through the entire post. The loophole was exploited by the two guys who discovered it and made over $500,000 each. They only decided to tell someone after making that much and then it started spreading.

Reminds me of something like the . + trick with GMail...

In any case, why arent people listing a whole bunch of SMS lotteries here for us to try out ?

Tell me that, fellow munchkins
