Buy both!
ETH is the foundation to many of these coins and gets paid on most transactions from it.

XRP will be accepted in state, local, government backed banks as their transaction fees are a faction of current procedures.
Once again....Buy both!

As per your second question... Yes and No
Allot of "Pump and Dump" coin movement and I enjoy riding those waves...
It's not for everyone but you can make xx to x,xxx a day if you drink enough coffee and don't blink.
