yes works, but be careful when adding amount of members.

THAT can backfire on you if they complain about being added without their approval. FB has a heavy "ban" hammer if they get complaints about this happening.

Regarding groups, yes OP, it's still possible and it's more popular than ever, mostly because FB lowered reach of our FB pages. They evolve, and like always, we evolve too. If there's a will there's a way, so:

Go make your groups magnificent

You'll lose couple of accounts every now and then, but just replace each lost account with two new ones and keep the ball rollin'

so op yeah it works and it's great for getting targetet active members i use it myself the only problem you will face is when you try and add a lot of members in a small amount of time and the "upload a photo of yourself"
and about the complains
hm
im adding around 30k-50k member daily
so all the complains (messages,leaving group,comments that they were added without their permission) are around 300-500 and i just ignore them
