Newbie question - domain expiring, does it go to auction automatically?

I have found a domain I would really like to register when it becomes available in a few months as it has great links. Question = when a domain expires, does it automatically go to auction, or is it first come first served after 30/60/90 days?

Assumptions -

1. current owner will have no idea of domains worth
2. current owner have not used domain for last several years
3. current owner will not look to making a profit from domain
4. current owner will not reply to pre-expire domain sale/transfer requests

I have got several decent domains in the past by stumbling on them and registering as they are available but never followed one as it expires so new ground for me.

It depends on the registrar where the domain is registered. Some registrars send expired domains to auctions, some send them to redemption. Godaddy, Enom, NetSol, Dotster domains go to auction.

That link states the rules of a registrar in notifying the domain owner, it does not answer my question but thanks for trying anyway. I have found the info elsewhere with the specific registrar, in my case Nominet - 90 days after expiry
