PoP will be discontinued Apple, Android, Windows

Just a heads up for those relying on pop for e-mails it's be slowly phased out. Yahoo started the trend. Apple, Android and Windows are next to phase it out. So all the old marketing software and e-mail software you have will become obsolete unless updated. Make your changes now so your business doesn't take a day off.

This is interesting. Do you have a source and/or reason for this? I am assuming it is security based but haven't heard anything about that, would be interesting to read more.

I'm not certain as to why it's happening. I know this information is legit because I got a friend over at Gdaddy that handles some of my server requests and he asked me about all my "free email accts" being used up (the free ones that come with oldschool shared deluxe hosting, I have about 300 all maxed out) he told me the phase out is already in place to get people onto Imap (off course IMAP is not free through them) Apple is nerfing then Android and then Windows is the order, so if you have apps or marketing programs setup up IMAP so you can get back to marketing fast. If you PM me I can shoot you my inside guy's name and you can call up support and get transferred, you can probe him with technicals and he would be happy to answer them.

POP is such an out of date system so that’s probably why.

exchange active sync is much better as you can sync all your devices.

So it doesn’t surprise me that pop would be phased out.

I can’t see it happening for a long time though. Even as everyone moves away from pop I’m sure it will still be kept as a legacy system so that old devices, printers. APIs etc are compatible.

It's got to be security with all the e-mails yahoo screwed up. We will see what happens but my guy has not been wrong and normally knows when to tip me off.

Interesting. I see this is only for connecting external accounts to yahoo and not for actually accessing yahoo mail via pop. Although it doesn’t say whether or not they have disabled that as well?

Yea, I guess it’s got to be security related though.

Funny because imap is just as bad imho at least in terms of functionality; it’s also an antiquated system.

I'm not saying this isn't happening but I don't know how an OS could phase out a protocol as it will still be used by thousands of email providers, until they all stop using POP it will remain.

The Yahoo link just states that they will stop allowing it's use for importing email, it isn't the same as it becoming unusable on all major OSs.

Something as huge as totally phasing out an entire protocol I would imagine would generate a lot of press, not just a mention from a guy at Godaddy.

Is there any place where IMAP won't do what POP does? I haven't used POP in 10+ years.
