Hi all, if you are familiar with Moz keyword explorer would you target a keyword with a difficulty of 35?

Yes its a hard keyword. What do you see at kwfinder.com

The same keyword is difficulty of 44 using kwfinder.com :( so would you not bother?

If you specialize in easy keywords you should not bother with harder keywords, no.

I would suggest you to manually check the first 10 sites ranking for that keyword. Although, the keywords seems to be difficult, you would get a much better idea whether or not you can outrank the already ranking sites.

Here are the factors you should check -
  • DA and PA
  • Number of backlinks to the page
  • Content quality and length
  • Interlinking structure
  • Images and graphics
  • Loading time
If you think you can create a better version of the same and get backlinks, you can consider going after it.

But if you're a newbie, I would suggest you to look for another easy keyword, probably below 20 keyword difficulty.

44 is waaaay to hard.

If you are a noob look for a keyword with 10 or less competition in kw finder lol

If Moz show 20 or below you don't have to think, all above 20 require double/triple check before final decision, good luck (you'll need little luck with picking a winner).

2 questions you asked:
1) would I consider this difficult? Yes
2) would I target a keyword with a MOZ difficulty of 35? Sure, I am targeting one that MOZ ranks at 66, and KWfinder says is a 74, so a 35/44, if it met the same interest level, I wouldn't have an issue with.

If you are dedicated, and build a solid plan, you can tackle some of these "difficult" niches, because so many SEOs avoid them, it is just taking on some powerhouses.

Hey thanks for the encouraging words :)

im not new to SEO, but ive always targeted keywords around the difficulty of 20 and below. To target a more difficult keyword i know is going to be a lot more work.

It is a lot more work, like a downright grind, but a good plan will get you there.

would your plan be a PBN ?
Not specifically.
Let's say I am targeting: home improvement
I am going up against some serious powerhouse authoritative websites, I mean some of these sites have entire design studios just for video creation.
I would start my plan by picking something tiny and specific, like: decks, then drop down further: backyard wood deck, maybe go further: repairing backyard wood decks, feel free to drop down 1 further: repairing backyard wood deck support beams. Ok, now you've ended up in micro niche territory and the competition is weak. So, then I would build THE post about "repairing backyard wood deck support beams", maybe make a video, maybe an Infographic. I would build some links and get it ranking top 5, then pick another micro niche, like "replacing backyard wood deck railing", and so on, until I had everything I could within subniches like that. THEN I would build up from there, and I would head up 2 levels: "backyard wood decks" write an authoritative post about the joys of a backyard wood deck, what activities you could do, decorating ideas, repairing them, everything. Whenever I hit on a topic I have covered, I link to it on my site. Now you have a post with 10-20-30 internal links. This is a page I would build a couple PBN posts, plus try to score a few guest posts to.
While all that is building and marinating, I would go after something inside the house, like flooring, then down "carpeting", then down "replacing old carpeting", then down "removing stains on floor under old carpet". Follow the above.
You're building relevancy to your site by circling topics, you're not having to build backlinks to everything, your PBNs and guest posts are reserved to where they can power out to many posts through internal linking.

That is a very rough blueprint of what I do.

When you start looking at the more difficult keywords that are going to require significant investment and work, you need to be sure there's a good return on your investment at the end of it.

When you say you would build THE post, do you mean page? or post?

Post.
When I say THE post, I mean the one stop shop, briefly touches on everything, links out like crazy to indepth parts of the important stuff.
Think like a link Roundup of all your best posts on a topic.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks for sharing.

To give you a comparison of what you are up against, I'm in a niche where the primary three word keyword phrase is listed as 47 on kwfinder.com.

I've been in this niche for over fifteen years now. I have articles on really big sites, that don't even rank top 100 for the keyword. I have web 2.0s that have never broke top 100, unless I put a considerable amount of decent links to them.

I don't recall ever seeing an "article" (from news, web 2.0s, blogs, etc) in the top 50 results, and I check weekly. The top 50 are all dominated by competitors.

By no means suggesting it can't be done, but it would certainly be a challenge. Even more so, with a limited budget.

Thats given me some serious thought. Do i want to spend 10 years chasing a keyword? not really. Think i would have to niche down.....
