If you have already more backlinks...

If you would be able to get about 10 whitehat news site backlinks for a page you want to rank higher, but you already having more and better backlinks than competitors, what would you do?

We are talking about googles first page and the site is an ecommerce site. The keyword/product is new, and until november it will be small, close-to-none search volume keyword, with already high serp fluctuation (some e-commerce stuff, what would come out in nov).

Should I be concerned about "overkillinkg" the specific page with backlinks?

You can t overkill with real, natural looking backlinks on news websites, (unless they are some crappy links or something) but if you can hold onto links, if i were you, i d build them drip fed till the busy period to keep the website profile alive, to look like websites continue to link to it and find it relevant

The power is not in numbers, its in quality.
If i own a tech blog and get 5 000 000 backlinks from spamming comments and I have more backlinks than engadget, i'm pretty sure i won't outrank them anyway.
This being said, you have mentioned the new links will be whitehat. So from a broad perspective, it won't cause any harm.

Unfortunately drip-feed in this case is impossible. I have a friend who works at a real PR-agency, and knows a lot of journalist. Sometimes he helps me with press releases. Right now we are having some news that would interest (in experience) about 10 sites, and they are willing to put a link for me in the news too (do-follow).

But it will give my page 10 backlinks immediately, indexed in max 1 day by google. Thats why i am afraid.

Pages go viral all the time. Sometimes gaining hundreds or even thousands of backlinks within a 24hour window. I'm sure your site will be fine getting 10.

Many times, the answer is very simple:

Wait.

Age plays a huge role with a site and if the backlink profile is actually better than the one of your competitor as you say, then you just have to wait.

Also, feel free to improve your onsite SEO, clickthrough, bounce rate etc., while you are waiting for your site to age a bit.
