They're earning next to nothing doing this.

I doubt they're earning more than 10k per month doing this shit (and that's an upper estimate).

I wont be so sure about that.

We are talking about 200-300 Mill of traffic.

And browser mining is nothing new its just not used as much since it requires a lot of traffic.

Only if you have a lot of traffic like piratebay has than yes you can give it a shot.. Anything less is better to stick with popups.

I went ahead and tried it on a site with 20K daily pageviews (average time on site ~6min).
With pretty modest settings of 1 thread and 20% free CPU time I made an astonishing amount of $2 in a week.

In parallel I explored the technology behind that miner and my only conclusion - this is not gonna work for a long time.
The main reason is the difficulty level that grows much faster than the CPU power of an average user.
It is already not profitable to mine Monero, and it will become much less profitable in the very near future.

The only viable use of that technology is to mine new cryptocurrencies, before their difficulty skyrocket.
And even then, you could mine much more with a single FPGA.

For a perspective, for 400K pageviews, I made around $33 in 2 days. In terms of CPM, its a total waste, but it can be an additional revenue stream for volume sites.

On the one hand I say fair enough, a sneaky way to earn but on the other hand using your user's resources to mine will probably backfire, especially when their CPU resources get eaten up and the system slows to a crawl.
