If my keyword is "best specific brand for use case" and the sites currently ranking for that kw are targeting "best general category for use case" will it be easier for me to rank that kw than the metrics would suggest since I would be targeting the exact search terms and nobody in the top ten is?

Get someone to overview of yourandyour domain post it here! with ahrefs i guess, check you competition, check what your competitors have,, blacklinks, social signals, domains that point to,, without any analytics no one will be able to give more info

when you say "targeting", do you mean this is the anchor they use? nowadays anchor has lost some of its importance due to optimization risk and other factors; one other thing that matters is relevancy, such as how relevant your page and their page are for that particular query; and overall DA matters, showing how strong a site is.

^^ This pretty much.

Definitely do a lot of reading on anchor texts. You will end up very easily overoptimised this way and it's very hard to get out out of the algorithmic sandbox once you screw up your anchors.

What I mean is, their page title, headings, and content all focus on a general product category for a specific use case, but are ranked for a specific brand for a specific use case. I want to rank a site for the exact search terms (i.e. the specific brand.)

For instance, if the search terms are "best black and decker for drywall" the top five spots are all about "best drill for drywall." I'm just curious if it would be easier for me to rank since I would be creating content about the exact search than if we were going head to head for the same search terms.

As for anchors, from what I can see, their anchor text is mostly naked urls with just couple matching the general search and not the brand specific search.
