Let's say I have backlink from example.com, this is a reputable site with good metric. Fast forward 4 years this backlink still alive and example.com is still a site with good reputation. My question: do the backlink losing its power over the next 4 years compared to now? Thanks

If the link is from a reputable domain, it will never lose it's value.

Infact with some nice tier 2 it will gain some more power and older backlinks are the best backlinks.

in general no, in fact some SEO people believe older links have more power; but it can depend on other things, such as what happened to the page where the link is; is it archived? how many clicks from homepage? if now it is at more clicks away from homepage than before, it can lose a bit of power.

Awesome! so as long as the backlink URL is good, the link's power is good too, or even better.

This is interesting. 3 clicks away from homepage vs 7 clicks away, is there any different? I know if the link on homepage vs 3 clicks away is big different, but 3 vs 7?

- the homepage compared to a page linked from homepage is one click away, and everyone knows this page has less power than the homepage; now say the page with your link is linked from that page, so 2 clicks away, and you are receiving less and less power with more clicks away from homepage.

- what happens after 4 years if this is a big site linking to you, depending on CMS, how big and active the site is, older pages tend to get pushed away from the homepage, so more clicks away from it; therefore the juice can get weaker over time;
- so this would apply for a big site like cnn; for a regular site on wordpress, there should be less of this type of effect.

It's Completly Depend Domain Authority.

Aged links are more powerful than recent links, especially from authoritative sites. however, you must get fresh high quality links to your site and add more quality content to keep up with everything and to show search engines that your site is genuine and powerful.

Great explanation, site like CNN added tons of new URL each day, and news article tend to fade away quickly hence the power of the backlink on that URL

I hope so, this makes website a really good investment. When it's getting older you just need to add more content with less backlink.

You're right, but don't you think natural backlink is good enough in this situation? Maybe if your competitor is aggressive and you're targeting hot niche, then you need to add backlink.

yup. um talking genuine outreach which gets you quality links not not gsa horseshit :)

I think there are a lot of factors that may influence a link power. While links do degenerate in power overtime, due to decrease in relevancy or new content from other sites, which may override its authority, if that page that is providing the link continues to uphold its validity, that link would still be an authority for that respective niche. However, if that link is somewhat abandoned or not maintained, or became less visited, then these factors would decrease its authority or link-mojo over time.

google algorithm change from time to time, not to assume that aged domain will have greater power, it doesnt work in this way, sometimes they may even disregard links as some industry are heavily spammed with backlinks

Yes they can, if you're buying PBN links where the seller doesn't reinvest ( as an example ) then the links remain but the domains will slide down in strength over time.
If you're getting a link on BBC or similar where the site's getting thousands of visitors a day, then these sites are going to maintain authority.

I have another perspective.

Tier one links are powerful because they have got a strong domain and tier 2 backlinks. Strong domain because of its authority which also translates to its backlinks

Overtime your backlinks (tier1) will either gain more authority and backlinks, or lose them which will cause either better ranking or worse ones.

This explains other members answer, as good and legit domain will probably get more links over time (cuz of new content, outreach or whatever).. While most pbns which are built solely for backlinks will mostly have rubbish content, won't rank for anything and will lose their backlinks over time, so they will get weaker and weaker and their power will diminish.

This is why the best backlink you can ever get, is a backlink from website making money from its rankings. Cuz as long as the owner of the pbn will always maintain his website to earn his income. As for pbns sold in marketplace (Backlinks you pay for once) will be abandoned once the owner can't sell more links for it. So, it won't stay for long. This is why many people complain about the power and quality of pbns in marketplace.

You can always assume if you are paying for a pbn once to get a backlink, then it must have a lifespan. It just make sense.

Does this mean they are not good?
Of course not, they have their own uses. Even expired web 2.0 can be good in some situation which can be concluded in one word.. Keyword Competition. The more competitive the keyword, the more cash you need to invest to enjoy its earning. While weak competition keywords, can be ranked with weak pbns and cheap backlinks and of course they will make less money.

The biggest problem most people face in IM is its just a business like any other business. There is no shortcut or hidden secret. The more invest, the higher income you will have. You have to know how much you need, how much you will make, and if you have enough resources to accomplish your plan.

Hope this helps to clarify things a little bit.

Just the opposite happens which if you think about it makes sense. A link from a "good' site that you have had for years should count more than a link that you just got but may not stick. You can actually see some "steps" at around the 6-9 month and 1+ year mark where you site even without any additional link building will jump up a bit because Google assigns those existing links more power. A lot of the "sandbox" behavior you see is not so much the site being held back but Google taking its time giving you full credit for some of your links.

Now some things can effect this.
If the page that is linking to you loses a lot of links. This includes internal ones that can happen as a page sinks down under new content.
If the overall site loses a lot of links.
If a lot more outbound links are added to the page. The more outgoing links the less each one is going to be worth.

To combat this if you have a link from a good page on a big authority site is you can build additional links to that page. Treat it like a tier one page or a page on one of your PBN sites. No you do not own the page but you can still build links to it. I do it all the time. Keep in mind though that you do not want to throw a lot of spam links at it. If the site owners notice a large amount of link spam going to a page they may change the url or delete the page. Also it is just kind of a dick move to link spam a site that is giving you a good link and that kind of crap ends up biting you in the ass at some point.
