Piratebay mines with your CPU

Well guys, i just noticed that TPB site runs cryptonight on your PC while you have their site in one of the tabs (JS mining).

I figured out because my PC became very loud. I checked performance, my i7 7700 was at 97% !?! and i had only lightweight programs turned on. Browser was using CPU, and when i closed TPB tab, usage dropped to 4%.

Anyone else figured this out? I don't visit often, maybe they have it for a while.

I have TPB open a lot but never had this problem. I'm using firefox if it matters.
 
chrome/ w10 here .
6k lines of code, i don't have time to study it. It is possible that if CPU is not strong enough they don't bother abusing it.

Yep, to confirm thepiratebay.se is running the coin-hive.com js miner. Use noscript extension.

I think chrome eats a lot of ram, happens to me all the time.
 
Ive got an i3 7100 and never noticed an increase in usage. Im on piratebay all the time. Will keep a closer eye on it next time

Imagine how much money certain web properties could make if they only knew :)

Yea, but this is illegal. And if someone dares to do illegal things, there are more profitable ways than JS miner.
 
I agree, morality aside, it is brilliant, and inefficiency isn't a problem because someone else wastes energy and hw. In a moral way - I actually don't see how is this any worse than people scamming visitors with CPA.CPA wastes users time, JS miner wastes computer resources. In a legal way, this is de facto malware.
This thread is not about how someone could use this, as its prohibited topic on this forum. Idea was to warn people.
