I am 2nd in google with a .gov site above me. Any ideas how I can win?

i think you have to live with that.. at least i never outranked

make the tiles / urls and metadescription more eye catching lol ... hard to think you can down them ...

Most probably the .gov site is not a competitor for you in terms of sales.
So like keinehabe mentioned, use special characters in title or in description to catch the attention of surfers.

Also you can use web 2 properties to catch the rest of the positions and rule page 1. Thus you will make up for the traffic loss.

Who the hell clicks on a .gov site? I don't unless I'm specifically looking for that govt info.

Seriously, you'll need more high PR backlinks. That's the only way. Even then you have a tough road ahead of you.

If you decide to give up, can I have the #2 ranking?

damn govt first rodney king and now your site.

jk

but yeah just because you're #2 doesn't mean you'll get less traffic. For instance, I can recall a million examples of searches I've done where my eyes just automatically ignore whatevers is in the #1 position, if its a wikipedia article or something.

Just because google says something is relevant it doesnt always make the right decision and the traffic alot of times knows this. they also know to click through to your link if - like mentioned above - the title is good.

i like neo's idea. Use your #2 ranking to help pull other sites you own in th 3-10 spots, then if you still want the #1 use those to get it.

heck I would be happy with a #2 rank :) Did you compare the gov site with yours to see how many good back links each of you have?

yeah i compared the backlinks.

Is it possible to get .gov urls? I guess its not

.gov sites would be hard to outrank but you could do it with a lot of high pr backlinks
