Hallo Guys, i am reading a lot the last days but i am new in this area and i need your help to understand what really works.

I bought ahrefs yesterday. Really great tool and i am enjoying it :)

When i checked some pages from my maybe competitors ( I have some working sites but i want to discover some new niches..), i see that they have 6.07M Backlings from just 4.7K referring domains.

First Question: Is this not a major indicator of spam linkbuilding? They are staying with a lot of keywords on position 1, so maybe they made something good..

Second Question:
When i checked the backlinks, there were a lot of crap pages with a guest book or something like:
Code:
http://schachkluboggau.bplaced.net/guestbook.php

http://harmony.ai-heartbox.com/yybbs/index.cgi?page=5&bl=0&list=thread

Is it still good to have such links? I thought google learned within the last years and improved their search so that such spammy things won't work anymore.

Third Question: For which values (DR ; UR) should i search when i want to create good backlinks? I see a lot pages with a high DR but low UR rank on ahrefs.

Would be very cool if somebody can help me. This will help me a lot with understanding the whole linkbuilding topic better :)
thanks!

What? Having a lot of sitewide links? It's hard to predict if links are spammy by simply looking at the amount of links.

No, but it's irrelevant. What matters is, what do their good links look like? These type of links are typically ignored by Google.

I try to look at all backlinks from a holistic standpoint. You can look at DR, DA, TF/CF, etc...but all of these metrics can be gamed. I always dig in deeper and look at their overall backlink profile, anchor ratios (does it look natural), and my favorite, do they get good traffic? If they are getting good traffic and it has been consistent or growing over time, there's a very good chance Google looks at them as an authority.

Hi, thanks for your reply!

For me it looks a bit strange that there are more than 6M backlings from just 4.7K referring domains. So there are a lot of links from just one source. Or do i miss something?

No, but it's irrelevant. What matters is, what do their good links look like? These type of links are typically ignored by Google.

Ok, so these types of backlinks are not important anymore and i can save my time by not creating some of them. I will check the whole link profile of the interesting competitor sites, so i will find the better links too. I think on ahrefs i can also see the amount of traffic from a backlink.

Hi, first of all, be careul outing competition links here, BHW don't condone this sort of behaviour. I really mean 2009-ish. To answer your questions:

1 - No, it's not indication of spam links, however, millions of links from thousands of domains seems a bit dodgy. Spam would be getting hundreds of thousands of links within a week or two.

2 - From what I see, these are useless. Perhaps, your competitor used these a few years ago when they worked?

3 - I don't pay much attention to PA/DA/DR, etc ... I trust TF/CF more than other indicators but then again, as @jstover77 said, these can be gamed.

To be honest, you can forget spam links, even if they work, they quickly burn out these days. It is better to build own PBN and hide it from backlink crawlers such as ahrefs, majestic, moz, etc ... so you competitors won't find out about your links. Or build links on pages that have unique content. Creating unique web 2.0 properties, etc ... and then use less quality links as t2. And finally, spam links as tier 3 links.

If you are trying to compete with a site with 6.07M Backlinks you are gonna be grinding a LOOOOOONG time.

Haha yes. They are not in my special niche, they are the main page in my continent about the whole topic. I just wanted to check then to "learn" a bit from there backlinks. They also have a few Wikipedia entries so hard to break. But all pages except them are not very good, so thats maybe the chance ;)

I think so. Maybe they will receive a penalty which would increase my ratings because of the huge amount of spam links.. We will see.

This is quite interesting.. Do you have a link for further reading about this?

They are ranking, aren't they. It's working ;)
Yes.. thats the point why i start this thread. But when i checked the whole backlink structure they have really good backlinks with high trust too.

Also because i am always reading about T1 - T3.. is there a guide for this? I think T2 is an expired domain that linkes to the main page? Would be cool if somebody can send me here a bit more information. Really feeling like a noob :D

I am still at the beginning of the new project and have to finalize my keyword search. Maybe i will start a thread into the story section.. Thanks for your help!

.

you "trust" 2 metrics, which are the 2 easiest to be "gamed" by nofollow blog comments and crap links.
way to go.

I dont "trust" metrics. I use experience to judge how:
expensive a link must have been in the past.
or how much time & effort it would have used to create it.
or a combination of both.

So I would value, even if metrics are low, a manual created link in an OBL 100 linklist of related site 1000x than a ton of crappy autogenerated craplinks .

I should stop splittesting everything, even metrics > correlatoin , So I can follow sheep's advice.

dam, seo is dead. I should use GSA now again and blast my tiers to oblivion.

The important thing is to have many reference domains linking to your site, and also the diversity of sites is very important, having links in guestbook or directories is very good as long as you do not abuse any of these techniques and have a lot of anchor text diversity And different types of sites, guestbook, directories, comments, guest post, PBN if your site has all kinds of links Google will support you

This is also my opinion. I think also regarding the machine learning improvements of google, the good links will add value to a page, the crap ones don't. But right now they are giving still a bit power to a page.

Can you explain to a noob, what OBL 100 means? :)

I think there is also a truth behind this. Maybe some "spam" links are not so bad to increase backlinks, especially when i can create the anchor text. I will try a bit with this.. What do you think? 5%-10% of links with this kind of source should not harm my site?

For nothing I use up to 15 or 20% and after 3 years doing SEO never penalize me penguin
