If they are forums with high traffic and you plan to post on a lot of threads then sure, you may get a nice bit of referral traffic. Just make sure not to use any keywords in your anchor text, use URL or branded.
For SEO purposes though, they are very weak links that will not do much for your rankings.

Yup, depends upon forums traffic's and your active posts based
Try to start with Niche & your service related forums because it will make your service related traffic leads.

From an SEO perspective you are not going to get much of a bump but if it is a busy active forum they will help a little but nothing to write home about.
However from a traffic perspective forums can be a big traffic driver. The thing is though you have to put some effort into if you want people to click on your link and come to your site. If your posts are quality and helpful members will follow you sig to your site. If you posts are just filler very few people will click on your link.
Basically do it right or do not bother as you will be wasting your time.
