Laptop for programming and personal use?

Could you please suggest laptops that are good for programming studies and also for personal use not gaming! i was thinking of buying a macbook but the prices are a bit high. I can pay around 300-500 dollars.

I was using a toshiba chromebook 2 to program on before I could afford a mac, issue is they don't have compilers built in so you have to use online compilers always.

Once you go Mac you never go back.
Look for a refurbished or second hand option if you can't afford a new one!

It depends on what kinf of programs and for which plattforms your going to develop. Pretty much any computer will do the job unless it's a plattform specific program like an iPhone application. In any case, I agree that developing in a Mac Is a joy (unix in general performs better than windows for this situations)

It depends on the kind of programming language/usage. If you are going for an open source language like Java/PHP/Python/Ruby and so on.. I recommend you a computer with atleast 8 gb of RAM (overkill? Not quite. Needed for the IDE, not the environment itself), and a processor more than 2ghz. If you build a desktop, this configuration will be pretty cheap anyway.. Mention your usage type and I will tell you what exactly I think you need.

For programming get a lot of RAM (16GB+) an SSD and a decent CPU. The more lines of code you can fit on one screen the better, so make sure you have a high vertical screen resolution.

tried all macs .. I just can't get used to them ... worst of all is aluminum palmrest so I have to put stickers .. tried couple more models - dell 9550 - asus zenbook - mi
Anyway .. always back to one an only - thinkpad - X1 !

Dell does the job for me, in my case 8 gigs of RAM with SSD is more than enough. On your place I would take a look at something above 5k points on CPU Benchmark and you are ready to work.
