If you practice medicine at the local hospital, how in the world are you finding the time to post such nonsense on BHW and reply to every post bashing you? The last time I checked, people who practice medicine are stuck at the hospital for hours on end working. When you say you practice medicine, do you mean you're one of those people who signs up to be a lab rat for clinical trials?

My advice is this; automotive companies spend millions upon millions on R&D every year. they've probably already patented your idea over 5 years ago and just waiting for the right time to introduce it to the market (i.e. to get an award for safest cars), or, like some people, not using it as they profit more from supplying replacement parts it'd lose them money to use the device. It actually happens.

What kind of mentality is this? That kind of thinking will have you losing out on something that "could have been". If you think your idea will make you millions, find a way to make it happen. Don't think about other people.
You think the guy behind Swoopo was thinking about 100 other people having the same idea? I highly doubt it. Even if he was, it didn't stop him from making his idea a reality. Now the site is making millions, and the 99 other people who had the same idea are kicking themselves for not taking action.

I think you misunderstood me.
If you know there are exactly 100 people with the same idea, then it should motivate you to make the idea happen before the other 100 people do.
If you get discouraged at the thought that 100 people have the same idea as you, then it somehow shows you a bit of your mentality towards life.

you might have better luck getting help from a local business incubator, from reading up on how to get backers for your idea so u can find a legitimate company to make u a prototype, etc. Also read magazines like Inc, Money, etc. I'm sure they cover such ideas. There used to be a show on CNBC called The Big Idea that was about this kind of thing.
This BHW site is full of ideas, etc, but it's mostly about making money online and isn't going to be of much help for what u need.

To the OP...don't care what you do for a 'day job'....if you think your idea is something that can inherently improve the safety of every car on the road today, regardless if those roads are in USA, Canada, Europe, Russia, Australia, China, etc., etc,...then go after your dream. I would suggest you not say much about what it is your idea/future product is and/or consists of, as to keep the "I'll keep you down below me so I can feel better about myself" type of people can kiss your ass when your idea/product/whatever becomes a reality!

Time consuming and expensive. Get familiar with those two words because that is what you'll face with a physical product design and patent process. Consider $200,000 on the very low end for drafting, research, design, prototypes, tooling molds, manufacture, marketing then 2 years for the entire timeline starting today. A patent is roughly $6-10k after lawyer costs, with a pending period of a year. During the course of the year if the patent office finds one thing in common with another product you will be denied which can be as little as using a screw that fastens two pieces together a certain way. If you want to pursue after that you can either get your lawyer to dispute it, or make the revision to your product and then resubmit.
The fact that your product would most likely require regulatory changes is enough for me to say that it will be a giant hemorrhoid to get patented. Also that it is being put in a car you will have to go through a tough inspection process not to mention convincing the car manufacturers to put it inside. People/companies that make a killing selling products design and manufacture it and sell as fast as possible without going through any sort of patent process. So many similar products can be sold on infomercials in competition because none of them bother getting patents and it's then down to the cold hard marketing of it, which is the route I'd take on my next venture(I've been through this before).
My advice would be per product but since you don't know how to build it and haven't described it in any sort of detail there is nothing to base it from which leads me to suggest you are nowhere near ready. Well, Pharoah, tell me what you do for a living? The reason why I mentioned my occupation was for the fact that some of the users on blackhat thought I was just average no life guy with no job.
I mentioned I work in the medical field because I actually have brains. Didn't know a person couldn't be on here if he was successful in life.
