I usually do ppc, but I heard about banner/media ads and I'm very interested in that . Is there a network that I can join and pay where they'll display my banner ad on various sites , or do I have to contact a website directly to have my banner displayed ? Can't seem to find the answer anywhere . Thanks !

There are a ton of display traffic sources for your purpose: Go2Mobi, Avazu dsp, Voluum dsp, Yeahmobi dsp, Exoclick, Startapp, etc.,
But at first you will need to gather some information on where is the best for you to start and what creatives and landing pages are you going to use. And to do that you will need ads intelligence gathering platforms (spy-tools), like Adplexity.
