You're fine, stop building links, start working on a new project or building new sites. It's a dance, which will usually result in you rising in rank. You'll probably jump, to 8, then 5 then 3 then spend a month or 2 climbing from 3 to 1, most likely will stop at #2. I have a website which has niches that pops in at 40, then 22, then 20, the latest I saw was 12, and it's no currently not in the serps, all other keywords are between 3 - 6. Just give it time to settle, adding more links will increase the risk of real penalty as well as make the settling time take much longer. If you don't see the site moving after a month or just constantly decreases after a month, then you may have been penalized

The only thing that i am doing right now is adding a 1000+ word article on the blog every week.

Sure. Tell that to hundreds of my clients who ranked with using expired domains. Tell that to me, person who ranked countless sites with those. Tell that to thousands of people who scrape and use them daily, because if they wouldn't work, nobody would be using them of course and let me tell you, you won't find half decent clean domain nowadays compared to few years ago. So yeh, it's bullshit bud. Every month there's some "innovative" IMer with few months old account I've never heard of in my life claiming some bullshit without any vast prior experience and it gets on my nerves. Do you know why? Because it's me who has to explain it to people 5 times daily that your crap is wrong. Because they "read somewhere this and that".

Entire logic behind expired/dropped/nondropped whatever domain is meaningless. Even auction domains are partially deindexed. Pretty much always. Difference between scraped domain with homepage indexed and premium auction domain with homepage indexed is in this regard none. NONE. Whether it was officially dropped or not means absolutely fuckall.

The only reason why auction domains work better, is because they are simply stronger in regards to the backlinks. Reason why live sites work better is because they have been in index since forever and their age is over the roof. AGE, actual age of their content, age how long they have been in index, not age when they were first registered. That has no impact.

So please, save yourself some time and don't even type further. Unless you did some vast testing with hundreds of expired and hundreds of auction domains, then don't bother please. If you used a few expired abused domains with shit for power, then used one stronger auction domain and got results and this is your conclusion then at least have the decency of not bothering anyone with your opinion.
