New to SEO. What variables determine ranking?

So i'm very new to SEO in google, I'v become good at youtubes, but now I want to learn googles.

Before I start jumping in i'd like somewhere to start myself and to do this I need to know the variables, but i dont want to be searching for them on google as i'd rather have someone on here tell me because I can trust people on here, they know the most about SEO.

So what are the variables that allow google to rank a webpage, for example does age matter? does the number of backlinks ect

Such a loaded question....

But since you brought up age I'll at least drop some knowledge there based on large scale research we have conducted on real world sites and results over the last few years.

Months 3-4 (moderate up to 30% boost give or take)
Months 6-8 (lowish up to 10-15% boost give or take)
Months 12-14 (large up to a 40% boost at times)

Those are the intervals at which we have seen BRAND NEW sites get what appear to be an "age" related boost in the SERPs. This data is based on billions of data points we have and analytics + ranking data on over xx,xxx sites in our network.

We'll be releasing a free SEO plugin soon to BHW that uses this data to intelligently make automated SEO improvements to your sites (and/or allows you to manually intervene) based on what is ACTUALLY working in the SERPS at any given time.

Thankyou, the reason im asking such a loaded question is, Im wanting to buy an expired domain from expireddomains.net

They all have different colums and im wondering what to look when getting a the biggest head start possible

Expired domains don't work as well as they used to, but they can give you a mild head start. If I had to place a few factors on the expired domain I'd say my top factors would be:

1. Number of unique referring domains
2. Quality of referring domains as graded by MajesticSEO (they are the most accurate when it comes to "quality")
3. Total # of links (as measured by AHREFs, they have the most comprehensive and updated database)
4. Be mindful of the anchor text used in backlinks as that will influence the rankngs of the new site (again I"d use AHREFs for this)

For any indexed pages be sure to do a 1-to-1 301 for each link to the new pages when you launch and ideally have it in the same niche as the expired domain.

Expired domains do not work that well anymore. If you are spending a higher amount of money for one, that money might be put to good use elsewhere.

Thanks for the input guys, I wasnt really looking to spend extra, just $0.88 for a domain name related to jewellery, but i thought if im going to buy on I may as well buy one thats easier to get ranked
