If I was interested in starting my own SEO Marketing Agency would I need to be knowledgeable in web design and things of the sort. Right now my strengths are in copy writing. What else would I need to be knowledgeable about in order to have a successful SEO agency?

Nothing huge in my opinion but anything you can learn will help. A lot of stuff can be done with tools and knowing how on-page seo works is massively important, i.e. keyword density, schema markup for ratings, link types and ratio's etc and as a copy writer you have a good insight into that already. Generally, what does Google like.

However, having said that, it is good to understand what things like CSS and JS are but concepts would get you by. After all, you do not need to know how to configure a linux or MS web server to minify CSS and JS or apply CDN and server side caching to a site. Just what they are and why they might help a particular client, then click on the right options and enter the correct details.

Most of the technical design side is programme driven but the more you can pickup as you go along the better.

IMHO. Personally, I come from the design side.

Not particularly, I would say On Page, Content and Local SEO are more important, then sub out the work you can't complete yourself.
The most important aspect, is you, having the motivation and drive to sell your business, yourself and your skills, so businesses will buy.

Yeah op you need some one with knowledge of web design, if you are serious about your seo agency.

These days SEO does involve some design work. You don't have to be a genius designer, but fixing usability problems, especially for mobile, is essential.

These days, design is needed for SEO. You don't need to be an expert, but you should know how to optimize a site for SEO. This includes designing a mobile site, choosing a fast host, choosing a good framework (for some site designs), and installing an SSL certificate, which google prefers.

You should have some knowledge in it, do you need to be an expert? Definitely not. I mean SEO works hand in hand with some of the internal design work but its nothing too crazy.

I take it the op is thinking of not touching websites and just ranking them (avoiding onpage; perhaps I am wrong). It definitely depends upon your skills and if you will have the ability to cherry pick your clients and projects. At minimum you will need access to someone that can handle working on the site as needed; which nowadays is needed much more often than years ago. I guess what comes to mind is whether your question is do you need to work on sites as opposed to design sites.

If you have no design and on page skill set yet, then you certainly need to get into the trenches and understand how to access your clients html pages, how to change their tags... from title to h tags, along with basic design such as adding images, site structure and conversions.
