Over Half a Million Subscribers but...

Hi guys,

I have a Youtube channel with five and a half million subscribers that grows by 20k or so a week. I'm number 2 in my niche. I post a video daily and I get between 75k to 450k views. I get a ton of interaction - comments, likes etc and I have a website in the same subject/niche as the channel.

I don't want to over spam my audience and loose them, so I put one link to my homepage in all the videos descriptions at the top so people don't have to click the description open to see the link. The problem is that I get very little traffic via the link to my website (20 to 50 visits daily). Shouldn't I be getting more? Am I doing something wrong, or is that normal?

Any tips from you guys would be gratefully accepted.

I don't think that you are doing something wrong. ~70% of YTB views are from mobile. Imagine if you are on a mobile watching the video, will you go on the website if you have no reason to go ? Do you give them a reason to go on, or you just put the like ? I've a youtube channel too, I would like to know more about you, I sent you a PM.

I just put the link in the description. No mention of the website, or links on the actual video. I don't want to appear spammy.

You should put a simple text with a great animation, just to say that they can visit the website. You probably know that people don't anything if you don't say them to do it (like when everyone ask to subscribe and leave a like). There is a big difference when you ask for it and when you don't say anything.

That sounds like a mid-size channel with no monetization problem, can you disclose your average monthly earning ?

From my experience most visual social media channels convert horribly, except there is a real reason to actually visit your website. If you just place your link in the description without any reason to click on it, i'd expect something around 0,1 - 0,05 percent conversion on your daily views.

So if you don't mention something like "if you want to see the outtakes, click on the link below and have a look at my website"..or...."download the full spreadsheet on my website, here is the link"...

In most cases i'd say, it's stupid to guide them to your website and rather bank on things directly on youtube. As most of your views will probably be from mobile, that is bound to convert so much better. Nobody likes to click on links on mobile.

These stats are for annotations, not end screens. But, it's a good idea to use end screen to get vistits.

You have to remember that you're trying to optimize for people to leave a site that belongs to a company who spends a whole lot of money to figure out how to keep people on the site. It is no accident that it's hard to get people to your website. No question, you can improve your results, but it might be a good idea to make sure your homepage has a prominent enticement to get them onto an email list. Then you can email them when a new video or article goes up (or a weekly digest of new content with a mix of the two). Getting a visit to your site is OK, but if you can get them onto your list, you start taking control of the relationship rather than letting Google mediate it.
