How to step it up from here? Advice needed.

I have a photography account that I post all of my own content on. I was posting 2x a week but now down to 1x a week because of lack of content (not able to travel as much).

I have almost 40k followers with around 2k-2.5k likes per image. I have worked on this for about 1.5 years but not serious about it until about 6 months ago (grew by 25k). I am a member of some smaller engagement groups but currently looking for larger ones.

If you had my account what would you do next? I haven't spent any money yet. I was thinking about paying to advertise. Or should I pay a larger account for a shout out?

Try and get sponsored, what type of content are you posting? maybe reach out to influential people in your niche.

I'll comment on one aspect, the lack of content:

Pay people who live in the areas you want to photograph to take photos for you so you have endless content. College students would probably be good to ask.

I'll leave the other questions to people who actually make a living on Instagram. Hope this helps in some way and good luck.

Not a bad idea but I want to keep it as just my content. I know the lack of content is going to hurt my growth but I know it can be done without posting daily.

I have been "sponsored" a few times. I have gotten free camera equipment and hotel stays. People send me stuff from time to time but I didn't think 40k would be enough to get a larger company to sponsor me.

I guess if I had to choose an objective it would be to grow awareness of my work to the point of gaining a large sponsor (Ex: Nikon) that would sponsor my travel and photography equipment. Then of course that would lead to more recognition of my work which would lead to more opportunities/sales. Ultimate goal would be to have someone like Nikon pay me to shoot content.

Offer to sell and advertise other people's photography on a website
Link people to affiliate based courses to learn how to do photography
Dropship a unique travel-related product

Something along those lines, try and keep it related or you'll loose your follower's interest very quickly.

If you want to grow the account you just need to post more. I generally post 3-4 times a day depending on my followers main online times which you can find in your insights on business accounts.

Yeah I wish I had enough content to post 3x a day. All of my post are print ready photos (lots of time in Lightroom). I only have the weekends to work on them. Personally, I don't see any reason to advertise if you don't have the content at the moment.

While you are waiting to get more of your own content I'd be reposting to keep the account active and gain followers and activity.

Insta accounts can die or ghost very quickly so I would say you have been lucky up until this point.

I have enough content to post weekly. I have posted on the same day every week for the last 2 months. Before that I was posting 2x a week every week for 4 months. Why would my account die or ghost if I am keeping it active?

You will need a lot of updated content every now and then to maintain the current followers and then to get some more. But since you're working on it, talking about the other aspect of the problem, advertising your account.
Both the ways are pretty simple, advertising your pictures on Instagram gives you full analytics of what your account looks like, how often people visit it and track every visit and follow being made on the page which ensures only the most interested people follow you.

While buying the shoutouts from a big account, it would be a little difficult to track the number of visitors and people who followed you from that particular campaign but they're cheaper than the Instagram advertising depending on who you buy it from and if you do it right, it might be really effective.

If you're really interested, I would suggest you to try out the Instagram advertising to test the waters and if it doesn't works, you can always slow down and switch to buying shoutouts from bigger accounts.

Repost old content - with 40k followers its unlikely they have seen all of your posts.

Find ways to make photography interesting in your home town. Develop your craft and share your story with your followers - 'I'm unable to travel at the moment, so I'm going to create unique images of things around my hometown'.

If you're truly a good photographer wanting to be sponsored by Nikon, what better way to show them you're worth putting their weight behind?
