What is the optimum keyword density for a 3 paragraph linkwheel article that I want to rank for a certain keyword?

For example, I want to rank for "discount laptops". I have ripped and spun some content about laptops in general and I need to inject my keyword. How many times should I manually insert "discount laptops" to be sure that Google will think my article is about "discount laptops" and rank me somewhere for that keyword, as opposed to "laptop power requirements" which may have been what the ripped content was originally about?

A good figure is around 2-3%, but KW density is not the only factor. Good content aimed at your readers and LSI play an important part as well. I have had articles of over 500 words rank high and last with literally only putting my keyword in like 3-4 times. It was because these articles were written with my readers in mind and had a lot of relevant keywords and keyphrases(LSI) that they did well.

With Google rolling out their Caffeine project and being more focused on giving quality relevant content to its searchers, I think it
would be wise to focus on KW density AS WELL as the other factors I have mentioned all as whole when creating your content.

Once is definitely not enough.

You still need to have your keyword in your content a few times.

I agree with the 2-3% as well. I always use the keyword as the first words in my title. At or near the beginning of my first sentence. Then at least once for every 100 words in the article.
I've read somewhere that putting your keywords in bold text helps but cannot confirm this. Wish someone could chime in and confirm or bust it as a myth.

Some of the articles I have ranked best for contained my keyword a mere 0.5%. However those articles were usually around 1000 words, and I made sure to include related keywords.

I simply typed my chosen keyword into the Google Keyword tool, and lifted maybe a dozen related keywords and made sure to include them all at least once. This nearly always got my articles ranked highly.

However, I wasn't into backlink building then, so the article often disappeared from the SERPS. So I have no way of knowing if this is a 'good method'. Yet it did work more often than not.

Even low level keyword density appears to work better if it is linked with related keywords.

Not sure how much help that is...
