I was ranking No1 for a long time when one day I dropped to No2 and stayed there.

I have tried hard to change it but seems that my competitor does his job better than me.

What do you think is better?
  1. Keep pushing and spending time+money to get the first place back
  2. Leave it there and use my resources (time+money) to rank other sites/keyords

Thanks

Why not look to target long tailed and other similar keywords ?

Have you checked the competitors site through Ahrefs or Majestic?

Option 2 of course, because indirectly it will also help you with outranking your competitor sitting at #1.

when i am in a situation like this, i build more sites for the same keyword and tryna rank them on the first page, lets say if i have a site ranking #2 what i will do is instead of spending money on getting it to #1 i will spend 70% of that money to rank a new site for the same keyword get it first page and use the 30% of the money to maintain the second position, i rinse and repeat and get one more site on the first page, when their ranking is stablized lets say Site B is ranking at #6 and Site C is ranking at #8 i will just go ahead and link them to Site A which was ranking at #2 and boom your at #1 (i know that sounds really easy but it isn't) This way you will have the maximum chances of hitting #1 and as a bonus you will have couple of more spots on the first page.

Probably some minor on-page detail. You can experiment and see changes in less than 48 hs if you request google search console to reindex it.

There are no long tails with decent hits.

To steal their backlinks or something else?

You mean, if I give backlinks to that site or if I make another one to hit #1 place?

as a bonus you will have couple of more spots on the first page

I have 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th (video) and 9th place on first page of results! It is kind of personal stubbornness to hit the #1 again.

i will just go ahead and link them to Site A which was ranking at #2

What do you think is better. To link from my other sites with exact KW (and they miss some SEO value for that KW but it is a good push for site on 2nd place), or just go with domain or brand anchors? I already have linked half of them...

Probably some minor on-page detail.

What do you mean? On page SEO or something else?

How can I do that? Through GWT?

you dont have to use exact keyword a normal citation would do, something like " Found another review of the product xyz on domain.com do check that out"
just dont link all at the same time, send one link wait couple of weeks then so on and on. I am sure couple of links will do the trick.
