Another VPN question

Hey guys,

So I decided to go ahead and get ExpressVPN. So far so good - can chooose from plenty of countries and servers. The question I have is what if you choose a server in Germany for example, but then go onto your own Facebook page, which blatantly states you are from somewhere else - how are you kept anonymous? This probably sounds really stupid but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I guess what I'm asking is how does the encryption actually work? You are basically just given a random IP address in different locations?

Mhhhh. I would prefer to use a Remote desktop and proxies for this. But for what is my knowledge a VPN is a good form of encryption for general browsing.

That's the thing. I want to know how it works exactly. I have done research myself, but I'm not very technical so have a bit of a hard time understanding. As you say though - if it works it works.

Encryption has nothing to do with the IP/Geolocation. Encryption basically converts all your incoming/outgoing data into non-human readable format. For ex, If you try to access this page on an Encrypted connection, the browser's GET request will look something like aHR0cDovL3d3dy5ibGFja2hhdHdvcmxkLmNvbS9ibGFja2hhdC1zZW8vbWFraW5nLW1vbmV5LzcwNjcwNC1hbm90aGVyLXZwbi1xdWVzdGlvbi5odG1s so no one can sniff your data inbetween including your ISP.

Why would you need proxies if you have a VPN? It's dirt cheap.

I wouldn't use a VPN for the Black hat activities because for many software you need to changes lot IPs so I prefer to buy anonymous proxies that I can change. Also the Encryption is nothing to do with different IPs.

You should have lot different IPs, not sure the VPN service is giving you this.

Sure, I have plenty of IPs - thousands of different ones. I'm not sure quite what you mean. Having different IPs is the main point of having a VPN. I don't need to run software, if I needed to do that I would have bought a VPS.

Oh, ok, I was thinking that you was going to use software for black hat action. If they gives you a lot of IPs maybe I should check it out

You can appear from 60+ countries, with multiple different servers. Right now I'm in Germany

If you're talking about connecting to US server located in denver but FB says it's located in los angeles, then you can't do anything about it. Facebook tracks geo ip differently and same with google.

I had a vpn server say I'm connected to los angeles, but google says that my IP is based on atlanta.

I think it's just a useful thing to have, even it you're just surfing online.

Encryption creates the tunnel that connects your client to another server. That server has a particular IP address. Thats how VPNs work. Your ISP just sees that you have connected to another server using an encrypted connection but cannot see what you are doing. The website you are accessing can't see that its you, they see only the VPNs IP address
