I am a music producer who not only wants to sell music, but I want to teach people how to make music the way I do. How do I setup a place on my website for people to become members or subscribers?

Use optimizepress wordpress theme and DAP (digital access pass), these 2 really work well together and is pretty easy to set up

I'd suggest that you first decide whether you are doing a regular HTML site, Wordpress site, etc...

In addition to my reply above...

AMember can serve you for both, a regular HTML site and a Wordpress site,
and it's one of the most widely used membership solutions too.

search for s2member , I'm using it in few of my websites and in my opinion it is much better then amember.
