Why has no major game studio pimped out a Zombie mmorpg?

Zombies are the new hit craze and can be found in everything from television commercials to documentaries on the History Channel.

I was watching the History Channel 2-hr special on a zombie apocalypse, and it got me thinking. What if you created a zombie apocalypse MMORPG? I know there are some on the Internet, but most of them don't seem perfect. If a major studio made one, it could be epic.

Imagine a world where you have to fight for shelter/food/tools. It would be an open world and it would be the ultimate sandbox experience. Will you be a good guy or a bad guy (if you read the Walking Dead comic, you'll understand this part a lot :) ).

Your enemies are not only hordes of zombies but also your fellow man. A game like this would be so addictive, and the market is ripe for this right now. Anybody else agree?

Good idea ... But I personally wouldn't play a zombie MMORPG ... Just think of it ... It's just like the Undead from other MMOs

If anyone doubts the successes such a game could have, check out SAS Zombie Assault 3. The game took off like crazy and is very addictive and very simple. I was actually thinking about a Zombie MMORPG the other day myself in nearly the exact way you are describing it. I am addicted to Zombies.

Limit the number of player per server to like 500, and those 500 represent the sole survivors. You can be revived but you drop your items you have gathered. If you want to retain your item, you need some special item or you need a team to travel with you to carry the items.

It could be great if done right. I could easily see people spending their days on it. The only problem I can think of is the the maps need to be changing infinitely. The point of a good zombie attack isn't just kill zombies and survive. People are always going to be traveling and wanting to explore new areas.

No idea how much it would cost to continue building these new areas but if it can be done cheap, it could be successful. The only way to counteract that need is to limit the amount of time a person can play per day, or have certain long ass missions which need to be done which for some reason take hours to complete.

Zombies has been done well in different FPS games, but not MMO's. No one really takes the time to hit the nail on the head, so there's real potential right now. Someone should take advantage of that as soon as possible.

Anybody ever-play Dead Nation on PSN? Now that game was intense with hundreds of zombies on screen at once.

Arg, but MMO's are so hard to code lol. I could put together a multiplayer game like this. But probably not an MMO.

I completely agree with this thread. I have always dreamed of a zombie MMORPG that would be just like The Walking Dead TV Series. People club together as survivors, be good or bad, find items and more people to join up with etc...

It could be fantastic! And I can tell you right now if such a game existed and was done well it would be epic! I for one would spend many hours on it whenever I got the chance. A few people on my Walking Dead fan blog and forums mentioned these ideas as well before, so it just proves there is much demand for it. Every zombie fan would want to play, and there sure as hell is a lot of zombie fans out there!

i think subscription games should start giving money back to the players like if it was a zombie game have tournaments like 100 people $5 buy in's for the round. Thats $500 split the money between the final 10 survivors.. things could get interesting. Or even if it was a monthly subscription game give the players some incentive to keep playing let the top players get a portion of that income.. have rare weapons that can only be bought thru a credit card or something.. shit I would give it a try.

So it would have to be on the scale of The Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG to be really good? That game took several years and $136 million to make.

zombies are by far the biggest hit right now. i got the zombie survival guide book. very entertaining read.

funny note: never use flame thrower on a zombie. they feel no pain and they now become a walking/running flaming zombie.
