I've been lurking here for several months and decided it was time to start something. I've been soaking up information and methods here for the past several weeks, and have finally found two things that really interest me, one being authority sites and the other being the use of social media to drive traffic.

Because I lack the investment to properly start up an authority site (purchasing backlinks, content, etc), I've decided to start with the social media idea by driving traffic to my website via Pinterest. Hopefully I'll be able to build this to $50/day and then use that money to reinvest into an authority site. My long-term goal is to do what Voidray talked about in his journey, of building up a website and then selling it, then using that money to reinvest into another site to build up before selling again.

But that's in the future. Back to this journey.

    My Goal Traffic Source Monetization
$50/day by April 9th Pinterest & some SEO AdSense & eBook
I will be setting the goal of April 9th for myself to encourage myself to work harder and not slack off, like I'm prone to do without a deadline. This gives me exactly 3 months from today to accomplish my goals. While this may seem overzealous to some of you, I know of another site in this same niche that reached approximately $60/day within 4 months. I believe for a newbie such as myself, 3 months to reach a little below that amount should be attainable.

Pinterest will be my primary source of traffic. I'll do some very generic SEO, such as on-site optimization and submitting my site to some directories, but I won't rely on SEO as a traffic source. My monetization will primarily be AdSense, however I believe I have enough experience in this particular niche to create an eBook that I could sell on the website once I start getting some traffic. More on the eBook later.

    How will I achieve this?

    My Goals
    • [*=left]Put up content daily on the website, based around specific keywords from my research. [*=left]Pin several images a day on relevant boards. Both my own content and others content. [*=left]Follow relevant pinners each day in an attempt to get them to follow me back.
I know it doesn't look like much, but I want my focus to be as narrow as possible. I'll create quality pins and content and share it across Pinterest as well as Google+. I'll optimize my website around Pinterest usage, making it easy for people to pin what they find, and have everything as tightly woven together as possible. If I find something that's worth my effort to branch out into, that matches with the focus of the website, I'll include it, but I want to stay as focused as possible.

Each day (or couple days, however this ends up working out) I'll create a post with updated statistics, accomplished tasks, and more. I want this to be a learning experience for other people, as I'm learning as I go, too. I won't post statistics without how I got them, but I also won't post specific step-by-step guides on how to do every little piece. If you have any questions at all, please ask and I'll do my best to answer!

Good luck! If you see that something is not working, adapt your method. This is the key.

Set up a lot of the groundwork today. Got a lot of core stuff finished and this will let me start focusing on creating content, being active on Pinterest, and accumulating more followers in days to come. I'll continue to tweak the site as time goes on and add relevant things. This journey thread is definitely going to help keep me accountable and keep me focused as time goes on. I know most of you reading this think "oh, a newbie wannabe" and check out, but I'm determined to prove you wrong. ;)

    • [*=left]Created a Google+ profile and alias, under which the site will run. This will make it much easier if I decide to sell the site, as I can just transfer the alias over and not have anything tied to my own name.
[*=left]Set up Google Analytics on the new alias profile and hooked it up to my website.
[*=left]Set up AdSense on my own personal profile (I can transfer this if I decide to sell the site)
[*=left]Set up the website with a nice theme and tweaked it to my needs.
[*=left]Signed up to Pinterest as a business for the website, using the alias name.
[*=left]Followed several relevant boards on Pinterest to repin from.
[*=left]Created 6 boards and pinned roughly 20 items. I'll probably continue pinning after this post is written.
[*=left]Wrote 1 post and put it on the website. This is low because I'm developing a system that will make it easier to mass-create posts in the future.

Day 2! Not a whole lot got accomplished today. A friend came and hung out who I haven't seen in a while. Friends > work. However, I was able to get some stuff done, just not as much as I could have. I have a system set up now for getting posts on the website, and although it still takes a while, I'm hoping to shave down time. The post I put up today took roughly 45 minutes to do. A big chunk of it, however, is messing with images. I'm sure there's a macro or something that can make this automated, but I'm not gifted in that area. Maybe I'll create something later down the road.

    • [*=left]Pinned 118 items today. I'm doing this all manually, but I believe that once I get enough pins on my personal boards, I'll start to accumulate followers more easily and get invited to group boards, where the "real" advertising starts.
[*=left]Wrote another post for my website, and got a system set in place for it!
[*=left]Followed roughly 30 people. I'll probably follow more after I post this.

For those of you looking to get followers and not sure where to start, here's some tips from my personal experience:

    1. Get some pins on your profile, first and foremost. A profile with only 30-50 pins looks brand new and spammy to a lot of people. Pinners want to know that you're sticking around for the long run and will fill up their feed with quality pins. I'd recommend putting up quite a few pins before major following of people. My profile has almost 200 pins spread out over 10 boards, and I've started getting followers. From my own observations, though, I'd recommend around 1,000 pins or so before you start serious following.

    2. Find pinners in your niche. For example, if we do necklaces as a niche, find people who are pinning JUST necklaces. This can take some time, but usually I go to a jewelry board, find all the pins that have necklaces, and middle-click on the pinner (this opens the window in a new tab). Then just click through the tabs and see if people are pinning only necklaces stuff. If they are, jackpot! Depending on how many followers they have, you should only need a few (4-5) of these.

    3. Start following the people who are FOLLOWING this person. This means that either a) they follow people back, regardless of interest or b) they're interested in that same niche, in which case they'll follow you. I usually only follow the people who have more than 200 followers and have a legit profile picture. Spammers are easy to pick out and most likely won't bother following you back.

I did this just this morning and received 9 new followers in the span of like 5 minutes. And I only followed 20 or so people!

Had a semi-lazy day, as it was Saturday, but I still got some work done. I plan on hitting this hard come Monday and seeing some income in the next week, even if it's just pennies. I have my plan mapped out in my head for the most part, so now it's just implementation and tweaking as I go along.

    • [*=left]Pinned close to 150 items today. Up to 300 total pins on my account. These aren't pins to my own content, but just repins from other people to make my profile look legit. I'm putting the pins that direct to my website in the group boards where more people will see them.
[*=left]Got invited to 2 group boards for a total increase of 13,000 followers.
[*=left]Pinned 3 items that pointed to my own content to these 2 boards.
[*=left]Wrote 2 new posts to put up on the website.
[*=left]Added an AdSense block to my website. It's now ready to be monetized! This took me embarrassingly longer than I expected. The ads wouldn't show up for the longest time, no matter where I added the code or how many times I reloaded the page or cleaned my cache. Turns out I had ad block on.
[*=left]Compiled a list of 30 potential posts for my website. I was taking longer than I wanted to figure out what the topics of my posts should be, so I just sat down and nailed down 30 of them. This should keep me busy for the next week or so. The posts themselves aren't hard to put together, but just time consuming. I'm going to have to figure out a way to automate parts of it if I want to reach my goals.

No update yesterday, as I try to take at least one day off during each week to rest, spend time with friends, and recuperate. Working yourself all the time isn't good, you need to have breaks in order to reach maximum efficiency. Not a lot got done today, as I've gotten sick. I managed to make some pins from my phone in bed, but other than that I slept and rested. Hoping to feel better tomorrow to get back to work.

Thanks for the tips! My niche is actually in the recipes area, as it's one of the best for getting click-throughs to your blog (thus traffic).

Not a ton done today. I've been having some rough stuff happen in my personal life. I know it sounds like a lame excuse for laziness, but it's just my reality right now. Not giving up yet though!

    • [*=left]Asked for several invites to group boards and got a couple of invites totalling around 12,000 new followers. Posted some of my website pins on there as well and got a repin on one of them.
[*=left]Wrote 3 new posts for the site.
[*=left]Spent some time researching automating my posting process. Because I don't know a lot about scripting and such, I think it would be more work to write something than just doing it myself. I've gotten it down to about 30 minutes per post, from start to "publish", which isn't too bad. I'll keep looking though. If anyone of you guys knows of a way to automate image processing via Gimp, let me know. =P

I had a talk with Silver January and after reading through his threads and seeing how he does what he does, I realized I'm going about this ALL wrong. I currently have about 10 pins pointing to my website, and while they're driving some traffic, it's nowhere near what I need to make some money. At this rate, I'll need about 4,000 posts on my website getting the traffic I'm getting, which just isn't feasible for a one-man team like me. So until further notice, this journey will be postponed until I can figure out what it is that I can do to make this work.

My current thoughts are to go with an AdSense site in a small(er) niche and focus on getting long tail keywords ranked via BlueMatter's method, along with some tips from VoidRay. I may start another journey thread, so keep your eyes peeled (if you care)!

I realized that I've been jumping around a lot with my project pursuits. Something like this will happen where it's a hurdle that I have to get through, and instead of barreling through it, I try to think of another method I can use that's "easier." I need to just man up and realize that there isn't "easier," but just what needs to be done, no matter how difficult it is.

I'm looking into iMacros now and dang this has a lot of potential to help me out! I'm going to keep pursuing this journey and not give up like I said earlier. I know I can get some money doing this, even if it only ends up being $10/day. That's enough to cover my current bills now, and will give me the motivation and enough cash to start investing into another method. So here we go!!
