first it was torrent sites, now it's the youtubers ... seems nobody is safe these days.

YouTube continues to crack down on sites and services that allow people to download videos from the site. Most recently, YouTube urged the operator of TubeNinja to cease his activities, or face potential legal action instead.

For now, however, the video download service has no plans to change its course.

While YouTube is a blessing to thousands of content creators, there are also concerns among rights holders.

Music labels in particular are not happy with the fact that music videos can be easily downloaded from the site with help from external services.

To address the problem YouTube is contacting these third party sites, urging them to shut down this functionality. Most recently, YouTube’s legal team contacted the popular download service TubeNinja.

Among other things, YouTube's ToS prohibits the downloading of any video that doesn't have a download link listed on the site.

Later, Google's video service adds that if the site owner continues to operate the service this "may result in legal consequences."

First, you don't need a site or even a plugin to "download" a video.

If you are careful, every time you watch a video you are "downloading" it lol! So there are ways to get your video from just watching it from youtube lol

Well, this is kind of sad for the TubeNinja owner. It won't really affect the public, though. There will always be a way to do it

Its funny that he is using vhs manufacturers as an excuse. The VHS Manufacturers weren't copying videos as a service without permission, they were selling a device.

it's ironic that they blame the public when it's the managers and company heads who do the most stealing from the artists.

UC browser comes with a default good looking download button just below the Views Counter. I use it all the time.

This is the first thing that came to my mind when I first read about this.

I probably wouldn't give in either. The letter YouTube sent is nowhere near as intimidating as some of the cease and desist letters like this one that I've seen Facebook and Instagram sending. Really curios to see if they actually will take legal action against him. I personally think they're all bark no bite.

adding a survey would be a better idea:
"if you want to use this download service, fill out this form first to prove that you are not a robot"

These guys are ridiculous. The problem here is not the service, although it does violate YT TOS - legal action can result, and likely will if the cease and desist letter is ignored. However, the problem will remain as it always has since the dawn of recorded media forms. There is nothing that can't be collected that is made available online.

There will always be tools to do these things, and people willing to do them. So how will you deal with that youtube? You made digital content available to view on the internet. They should probably pull their heads out of their butts, because they are talking out of both sides of their mouth. They actually WANT people to do this anyway. They just don't want their content providers to jump ship and take their products to more secure services so they need to create the appearance of self-policing when in fact it serves their own interests 100% for people to do this.

YT/Google - you're completely full of shit. "Oh, we hate the spammers." Really? You guys don't seem to mind keeping tons of illegitimately acquired ad viewing time and the revenue it creates when you ban accounts.

I'm confident nobody will ever know how much money YT/Google simply steal this way by not returning fake ad-view revenue to advertisers even after accounts get banned.

He will likely simply whitelabel his own service and sell it on a new domain. I'd have a couple on tap for backups I suspect. I don't think his service should be viewed as infringing.

People use it for nefarious purposes, and that's not really the owners fault. They're simply a video download service provider, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all. YT should leave him alone, but he should prepare now, and also avoid getting the legal action taken by simply starting a couple new sites so when one gets a request to stop - he can continue to provide his services.
