What are the rules on using images and video clips that don't belong to you in your youtube channel. Let's say I want to make a "top 10" type channel, where some videos cover current events, say I make a video titled something like Top 10 Space Shuttle Screw Ups.
I have 5-30 seconds worth of video I ripped from CNN of a space shuttle exploding, my commentary while its playing, and then some photos of the aftermath taken from google images, more commentary, and then it goes onto the next shuttle in the list.
The overly cautious people of the world say that you need to get consent for every video clip and image that isn't labelled as free for use or isn't a stock image, but we all know that successful people don't do that. You see these top 10 type videos all the time.
Is it like blogs where it isn't enforced or are you allowed to rip bits and pieces of anything under fair use as long as its brief and/or not damaging to the owner? Keep in mind I will use royalty free music so this only applies to images and video clips of real people, events, brands, etc.
