Already announced in February this year, and starting 21.04, Google will change it's search engine algorithm, helping mobile users get better results. Mobile optimized sites will be "rewarded" with a better ranking, while others ranking will decrease.
There will be a major hit, as many websites will fall down the hill. One analysis of 25 000 top ranking sites showed that around 10 000 failed the test. They even called this the Mobilegeddon.
So, mobile user? - Good for you, better experience.
Webmaster or website owner? Check if your site passes the test here. Or prepare for the worse.

I think that update started few days ago as for some of my sites is see big increase in traffic , mostly longtails ...

This has been brought up a few times on BHW.

But helpful for anyone that lives in a cave and hasn't heard about it by now.

Thanks for the link to the check for mobile website.
How much of a hit are we talking, drop a couple of rank positions?

I read a thread a month or so ago, saying this big update was today. I spent hours making my top sites mobile friendly. The sites above and below were not mobile friendly. So far no change in ranking.

I believe that desktop rankings will be the same, mobile users with get different results.

You are correct, info confirmed by searchengineland.com

Q: What is this algorithmic update, who will it impact?
A: This update will impact only mobile searchers and it will give a ranking boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google's mobile search results only.

Q: Will it impact desktop searchers? Will my desktop rankings drop?
A: No, it will only impact mobile searchers and will have no impact on your desktop rankings.

I wish it impacted desktop ranking too..

I highly doubt this will have much emphasis on desktop, and more improtantly most niches that are mobile focused. I think the major thing will be that the SERPs will show not mobile friendly warning or make it hard to click on those SERPs to visit the page.

This could obviously have a negative effect because of low CTR from the SERP page so you may see some effect on desktop but I doubt it. Time will tell.

Looks like the change is rolling out?

I see a boost in longtail queries that land on my websites. May be 10% of it is mobile, the rest are desktops. They rolling the wrong 'armageddon' out? :)

I'm sure this update is well meaning, but I really don't like mobile sites, I'm sure I'll get used to it but given the chance I generally opt for the desktop version.

If you have your website the way that it both shows right on a Desktop and Mobile device you don't have to worry at all.. all our website have been setup this way from the beginning, so we are busy doing business not fixing our websites ;) :p

All the people that will click on the checker and put their website in it with the referrer being Blackhatworld lol :)

Sorry if this was already posted, but I didn't noticed it when i was writing it. Still, helpful for the cavemen.

Yes, but today many searches are from mobile devices, so still there is going to be a significant hit.

It's going to happen today, so let's wait and see.

This is just another reason why all websites should be mobile-friendly.

The current best reason to profit?

Will you get such a msg in your GWT account if you are not mobile friendly?

Haven't found anything about that, but check it with the tool I posted. It's from Google itself.

Well yes, many websites are already Mobile friendly (since most of them are built on Wordpress or other platform), though still it's a good info to know, since there are still many websites without responsive design etc.
