Wasn't sure where to start this thread, so hope I got the right place..

I have a health & fitness website, was thinking of implementing a lightbox popup to increase my email list.

Do you think it would be a good idea, or do you find them annoying?

I was also thinking of giving new signups a free ebook relating to health & fitness, which could make it less annoying and increase conversion.

    Thanks.

I do not do pop-ups, further more I think there is more SEO value in not having them. I use widget/sidebar action to get sign-ups and say something like

"Sign-up for our free newsletter and get our free coping guide to XXX"
"Over 75k subscribers can't be wrong, do not for get to rate our free ebook"

Next I put an image of 4 out of 5 stars and a caption "out of 8000 votes"

Doesnt have to be this specific but you get the picture.

Yeah I currently have the sign-up form in the sidebar but I think conversions would increase if I had a popup.

I had no idea people actually do that, does it look legit? Would you do it on a white hat site or only black hat?

I use it for all, however use realistic numbers or % if that helps. You could always spruce up the call to action. Peoples eyes are drawn more towards circles and certain colors. Try using some hypnotic Seo on it. :)

If you want to add a pop-up, make it appear after one minute. I used to have a facebook pop-up, but eventually decided to go for one to collect emails.

In the small amount of time I did use a signup form, I got more signups with it in the sidebar, over a popup. I also find those sort of things rather annoying when I'm trying to read something. I'd stick with a sidebar or footer thing personally.
