Was a member of a Mensa SIG in Jr. High School but found that although I was surrounded by very intelligent people, most of them couldn't walk to the corner store without a road map or a guide.
Some could do diffferential calculus in their heads but couldn't find their feet if they looked down.
I could read at around 2000 WPM at that time with extremely good comprehension and this was actually a real problem for me as I could absorb so much information in such a short period that I became easily overloaded and therefore had lots of difficulty functioning; it's no fun having a conversation if after three sentences you know where it's going to end up!
These days I generally cruise at around 1000-1200 WPM.
Later diagnosed as being dyslexic as Hell and even later with Adult ADD the IQ for many years proved to be of limited value and even now, as I am medication resistant; I have to use biofeedback techniques, actually using acquired information and knowledge can be very difficult.
Practical application of knowledge is the most difficult; it's like, "Well, I KNOW how to do it, so why bother?" and what I'm referring to is not what might be called procrastination or lethargy but rather a very real inertia which must be overcome on a daily, minute-by-minute basis.
Let me give you an example how how this works sometimes. I like to build things and recently did an expansion on my house. I went to the lumber yard to arrange for materials delivery and just rattled off the entire list as the guy wrote down the order. I had done no drawings, no blueprints and had not written down the list myself and had only jotted down the dimensions of the room I was going to construct. My list was 100% complete, right down to the right number of boxes of nails. Now the flip side of this is that if I go to the grocery store, I MUST write down everything I need or I will end up making three or four trips to get it right and there is no telling what I will buy!
Given a matematical formula, let's say for calculating the displacement or horsepower of an engine, if given the appropriate dimensions, I can tell you with a few seconds and be right on but cannot write it down or even really tell you how I did it. I just know it.
"Show your work!", the teachers would tell us in school.
Yeah, right!
How do you "show" what you don't see in the same way that other people do?
I can best describe this anomaly when doing calculations that it is as though there is a fog of numbers swirling around like a swarm of bees and that the answers precipitate from the cloud with the numbers falling into line like the letters in a movie title or an animated game of Scrabble.
There is always a trade-off, I think.

a proper IQ test will run you some money..around a few hundred and it can only be given out by a psychologist. and they take min 4hours or so...depending what test. ...
well... i dont think IQ really measures too much about how "smart" you are..but more like how "smart" you can be and how fast you can become "smart"..
if you are 15...you shouldnt know your IQ... they recommend miners arent told what their IQ is... it may interfere with you progress...might get too cocky and slack off in your studies... thinking you dont have to study cause your different than the norm... or if the score is low..it is a big disappointment to them as well.

Thanks for revealing so interesting things. About the difficulty of application:
you need to be on a purpose to achieve a result; yes, it's a hell of quantity that you have to do in terms of efforts to get the quality taking shape.
If there is no enough purpose, then the execution may never reach to an end. Purpose comes from intention, and perseverance in action from interest.
Beside of "I" as Intelligence one may need at least two other "I"s to achieve results:
Intelligence + Intention + Interest
These added together may result in a 4th "I" = Involvement in a game.

I did an IQ test about 6 months ago, not a proper Mensa job or anything, but it only scored to 160 and i got all the questions right, so scored me as "160+", which was the same if i'd got 2 wrong.
I plan on doing a proper Mensa one soon, because i always wanted some kind of official paper to show i'm not thick (i got kicked out of school before i completed my A-Levels).

I had a GF once with a provable IQ of OVER 180.
Unfortunately she was also a complete sociopath and I'm not kidding.
She thought out things so far in advance that the only way to beat her or break even was to get away from her....like half a continent away.
She got me for just under $150K, so I feel fortunate.
I later found out that she had been married six times and that two of her husbands had died "mysterious" deaths and that in one of the deaths which was initially ruled a suicide, the guy had shot himself several times and again I'm not kidding; the cause of death eventually being ruled as undetermined.
She was never charged but they knew.
Ya know how I got her to leave me alone after I "broke up" with her?
First let me explain about the Government Model 1911A1 .Calibre 45 ACP.
It is a .45 calibre handgun best carried in "Condition 2"; that is, with the chamber loaded, the hammer back and the safety on. This condition locks the hammer, disconnects the trigger and locks the slide. There is no known instance of Model 1911A1 firing in this condition unless the firearm was damaged or excessively worn.
She came to my house for about the 50th time after the breakup so I got fed up and stuck a cocked-and-locked .45, not between her eyes but under her nose so that she could see it by crossing those pretty little green eyes and looking down.
I then unlocked the 1911A1 with the accompianing resounding "CLICK".
I then told her that if she ever came near me again that "CLICK" would be the last sound that she ever heard and that also by the time the cops got there, it would look like she started it because she would have a fired "throwaway" , which would be found near her lifeless carcass and a pariffin test on her hands would indicate that she had fired it.
She believed me and I have not seen her, nor will I ever see her again and that is just fine with me; she moved to one of the coasts where she has taken a 7th husband for two houses, over a mill, driven him into both a Chapter 13 and a Chapter 7, dumped him and now has a new "boyfirend".
You are wondering whether or not my firearm was loaded and the answer is, yes, it was loaded and yes, it was chambered and yes.....I had a "throwaway" in my belt, just in case I got the wrong answer.
I would never do anything like that again unless I had to and I swear to you that this story is true; on my Father's grave.
Intelligence does not always indicate smarts.
The only problem is that she was an astonishingly great piece of a**!
I suppose that one gets what one pays for and sometimes the fuckin' you're gettin' and worth the fuckin' you get.

Buddy, they are out there but plan on checking yourself in and have a good medical plan in force if you want to deal with one of them.
In my case, no medical plan, so I had to find my own "therapy", if you will and I found it with that 1911.
One of the things about extremely intelligent people is that they tend to soncider themselves above not only the laws of Man but the laws of the legal system.
Laws are for the unwashed as far as they are concerned..

Well, one thing that can happen is that sociopaths can get beaten down by life and straighten up and that does happen. The truth is that such people are really born that way, some are made by beatings as children, etc but if they are lucky and I have to say lucky as there is no real support sytem, they sometimes get to a point at which they are no longer dangerous, are not a threat and may even "act" like normal people; whatever the Hell that is.
"Born" or "made" sociopaths do not "feel" as "normal" people do and they really cannot help it as they have either been born or made at a very, very young age "hard wired" the way that they are.
The gal to which I referred in my post had been savaged by sexual abuse starting as a baby; which sexual abuse ran until she was well into her teens.
Her mother actualy sold to to a thing called a "lockdown"; a house in which children are sexually abused for money.
Basically the kids become unwilling prostitutes; sexual slaves.
The sad thing is that for the most part they cannot be fixed and perpetuate the abuse as therapy.

Makes one wonder about Doc Hawkings. His first wife said he was a world class manipulator and very domineering. I suspect high IQs lead to boredom and boredom leads to challenging the normal rules of society.
People always want to see if they can, "get away with it".
