What do you guys think is the best rock album(s) of all time (in your opinion)? I may be showing my age here, but I'll throw in 2 that are on the top of my head: Pearl Jam's "Ten" album, and Alice in Chain's "Dirt" album. I'm sure some of you will ring a bell when you post.

PS - If you don't already know about it, check out playlist.com to listen to free music online (no I'm not associated).

Music is too subjective to select a best of all time of anything. I think a better topic would be: What is your favorite album of all time?

    Oh man...so hard to choose...

I'd have to say Tool - Aenima and Rage Against the Machine - Self Titled

    Couldn't go on without them

Runners up... QOTSA - Rated R and Radiohead - OK Computer

Good choices in Dirt and Ten though Clix.

I think The Black Album by Metallica was pretty influential for me personally, maybe AC/DC's Highway To Hell or Black and Black albums too.

Home by Sevendust was a great album too.

I'd say it was "Once Upon A Time" by Cinderella, and "Trash" by Alice Cooper.

Though Survivor and Def Leppard rank pretty high up there too.

And let's not forget The Queen, who were the band that originally introduced me to rock.

    Good music...

Would a greatest hits album count?

If so, Alice in Chains: Best of the Box. HANDS DOWN.

Come on!! Quite a few alterno-rock albums here. Tool is definitely more "art rock", Rage are too experimental to be considered "rock".

How about Led Zeppelin - II or Jimi Hendrix - Are you experienced, Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Guns'n'Roses maybe?

Debating this with my mates right now, great topic Essential!

A quick wiki search has opened a few new options

Well it's pretty open-ended there eshaman. There was no specification as to which category of rock. The one's you named are more "classic rock" and Jimi is very "experimental". Tool is Progressive Rock and Rage is Rap/Rock.

Regardless, those are my favorites. Perhaps we are from different generations, but the category "rock" is very broad and has many interpretations.

quote from your link: "Rock music is a loosely defined genre of popular music"

It is not my favorite - but in terms of sheer success, the greatest rock album of all time has to be Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. Every track on that album was released as a single and charted high, the album itself spent years in the top end of the charts.
