I have noticed that my authority site has been garnering good amount of natural links over time. I attribute it fully to a wide range of topics discussed in the site [ all topics are related to just one niche ]. And when that happens, you certainly increase the potential to garner more natural links. These links are not thousands in number. But i know for a fact that i have got at least about 100 links naturally. Some are from PR 6, PR5 sites. The beauty of these links is that it has fantastic co-citation. Please look up-co-citation.

Some of the links are to deep pages and some are to home page. What you should take away from this post is that the more focus you put on developing original and unique content, the more probability you generate to get a high quality link. So, focus more on your content. See to it that your sites are not just MFA. MFA sites still work. But in the long term, they will DEFINITELY not work. Having 100 sites slapped with adsense will make you money. No doubt.

But one day, they are all going to be deindexed. Trust me. THEY WILL! On the other hand, if you invest some of that money you made using MFA into developing one authority site and go more whitehat, you are strengthening the foundation for your online career. And it will only get stronger. Investing wisely is very important. All newbies, take note of that.

I am not saying MFA should be dropped. newbies are better off starting out with MFA [ if a google guy reads this, he is going to be pissed off. I know. But this is the truth, G guy]. Because it is one of the easiest ways to make money when you are starting. But just do not depend totally on MFA. Move onto something stable. Or if you do not mind building 100 sites, making money, seeing them deindexed, building another sites network again, making money, blah blah, you can choose the MFA route for good.

A primer on getting natural links:

    1. Having a non-MFA design certainly helps,
    2. Having a domain name that does not read " buycheapestlatopsforchristmasonline.com" helps,
    3. Making the site look like it is a brand helps [ try having a tagline along with the logo ]. Even better to have a real brand,
    4. Having a decent logo helps,
    5. Having plenty of related content is good,
    6. Show off your best content prominently in the site,
    7. Focusing on just ONE NICHE [ you are better off with a niche rather than a micro niche ] helps a LOT! I mean, that is what is all about being an authority, right?

[ I will add more if you are interested and if more things come to my mind ]

Now i want to ask you.

    1. What has worked for you in getting natural links?
    2. How many natural links have you obtained to your flagship sites?
    3. Are you even concerned about getting such links?

    Fire away your answers.

Well, what you posted is exactly what google and I assume all search engines are looking for. The issue I have encountered is that the "big boys" already have 10's of thousands of links due to people referencing their sites already and/or affiliate programs.

I am speaking e commerce here, not so much generating income through adsense or what not.

But I do agree, my hobby site that really does not have a great chance of making a ton of $$$ ranks pretty well but the site I have for actual $$$ has very little traction on the search engines.

Oh. Is the site [ with high potential for $ ] a macro niche? Or is it niche or micro niche? Playing with the big boys can wear anyone down.

I only have natural backlinks. not even 200 of them. sites almost 2 years old. I never paid attention to backlink building in my life just good content and my site is on the first page for several competitive keywords.

IMO backlinks don't mean that much anymore.

Would love to hear more about it, KeyzDT. If you do not mind, could you share how the site is doing revenue-wise? Just asking since you said they are ranking for competitive keywords? Are the links mostly to deep pages?

The money site is a retail site so it is not heavily optimized for SEO. The name is not something like "buycheapdvd"dot com..It is an actual name. Also because there are porbably 20 categories and 12000+ products it is very hard to focus on a keyword to optimize the page.

My best bet IS going to be getting good quality links from blogs and forums related to my products.

Your best bet is to see what keywords drive traffic to your products' pages and start building links for them.

    Un-natural! :saeek:

I work full-time in a very competitive niche (law/legal) and getting my content to acquire links naturally is my #1 goal.

To go over your questions in a little more detail:

    1. What has worked for you in getting natural links?

-Local Niche Content: I've found a "content-type" if you will that gives my company a steady influx of almost formulaic article's I can have my content team spit out by the dozens. All of these are 100% unique and almost all provide a steady drip of incoming organic traffic almost immediately after posting. Quite often these articles gather a lot of natural backlinks. One such source is other lawyers citing my site as a source, another is news aggregates who crawl for content similar to what I'm posting.

-"Needed" Content: Working for a law firm is great as you can be easily viewed as an "authority" source and you don't need to work hard to build your website up as a "brand" persay - all the trust you normally need to build is provided by your attorneys.

This allows us to focus on writing about topics that I KNOW there is a lack of content for. I can take a well educated guess as to what these areas might be by using wikipedia (looking for articles in my niche that still need sources or are considered "unverified" are gold!) as well as looking through my competitor's backlink profiles to see what's getting natural links for them.

Once I've decided on a topic I get our content team to write a well cited (important!) article which I submit as a source on a wikipedia (have yet to have a link removed as a source). From there you play the waiting game.

    2. How many natural links have you obtained to your flagship sites?

150+ over the course of 6 months. 80% of those within the last 2 months.

    3. Are you even concerned about getting such links?

I am not overly concerned about them, but when I see them started to leak in I get VERY excited. There's really no easier way to linkbuild! (well I take that back...it's not easy to get to this point but once you do it's a relief).

Generally I am more concerned with my article sticking as a wikipedia source.

But the key is really providing something that is actually new and cited.

You can sit back and write 100% "unique" articles all day, but chances are your unique articles are all re-answering the same garbage people in your niche have been writing about for years - for that reason they aren't going to attract natural backlinks.

The hardest part isn't really writing the article, but finding the "need" you're going to fill.

    WOW!

Those are very helpful and insightful answers. I know what you mean by job geting easier because of a reputed and established law firm. Once a site is viewed as an authority [ and not a small fish ], it does really become easier to get a link. And i feel the same excitement as you do when my site gets a natural link. Especially from the recognized and trusted sites in the web. Thanks a lot for your input.

Please keep the inputs coming, everyone. Thanks.

The truth is that it is much easier to build links to informative web sites than for other kind of sites. So i can see why it has been a bit hard for you to build links to the commerce site. But i believe there has got to be some ways to do that. Hope someone in this forum can shed light on that topic.

    could be.

The only thing is is what about these people that have XX,XXX amounts of backlinks and cant get ranked for anything. With that amount of backlinks you would figure a site would budge a little bit. I never paid attention to backlinks and and get ranked for all kinds keywords my puny little 100+ links are doing that? That just seems way too easy to me.

Whoa. With that kind of age and establishment, you already have earned a lot of trust. A few natural backlinks would make the site killer. Could you tell us how the site performs? Thanks.

I think when you have authority on a subject and other high ranked trusted sites link to you it does way more for your page than 100,000 of these bogus linkbacks people are pushing.

I used the analogy the other day but it bears repeating.

I have been watching these debates and town hall meetings with politicians and for some reason I could not help but relate it to SEO.

Politicians push for funds to support their campaigns so they can be seen by the public, the more they are seen the more chance they have to convince the public that they are the better choice.

They can get funds in many ways, the best and reputable way is to get donations from reputable, high profile sources. Other ways include getting funds for different special interest groups or other shadier sources.

Of course if your opponent finds out, he will expose you and it will damage your reputation with the voting public!

I see SEO as the same way. There are many methods being posted here and most advise you to stay away from using those methods directly to your money site. Why? They are not reputable sources, that is why.

If they were, why would you divert the link?

On the other hand if you could get a handful of links directly to your site from sites with a good reputation and that are in context it would do you more good than those 10,000 crap links flowing through to your buffer and then your buffer flowing to you.

I am confused about the buffer too while we are at it. Most of these buffer diagrams I have seen basically are a straight line to spammy links and then they divert to the money site, how does google not see this? It is not a really sophisticated system. In essence it is Money Site< Buffer Site < Spammy Links. How does this help and does google really not realize the relationship?

Very good, most of it is true in my eyes.

You just forgot, that you can build your own network of natural sites on your own.

Well here, i earned quite a lot of chineese links. I sent traffic to my free service page through youlikehits. And PIM ! Somehow a Chineese discovered my website and started promoting it in a forum. 2 days later i had dozen of those. And now i can't even follow :). I believe it hepls in my ranking and my taffic got way higher suddenly.

Although, most of those links are straightly copy / paste from the first place.

Also, i think what contributed a lot was that i let an ordering page unlocked, and ppl start to say "wow i've discovered a "backdoor", you can take the free offer without filling some ads" :)
