You’re More Than a Marketer

The problem is that, while roles required of a marketer have changed, most marketers continue to be ruled by this old playbook. They sell a product or service. That?s it.

I don't agree to this. This is a US perception. A marketer is not seen as a person who sells a product or service, that's what a sales rep does. A marketer is a person who promotes a product or service building a brand in the process (in most cases). A marketer is involved in building relations with the clients and other suppliers.

In US they use the word marketer but most should be named as sales persons. That's their fault of not being able to give proper job titles.

But what do you expect from the country that told janitors that they're sanitation specialists and bartenders that they're mixologists...

Anyway, nice article, it promotes healthy perceptions.

LOL at the janitors!

But yeah, Sales Person and Marketer sometimes can be mixed.

To me, marketing is the art of connecting goods or services to a desired audience.

I think a lot of people mix "marketer" with sales and other shit because it is included.
IMO sales can be included as part of marketing, as it is essentially connecting the product and the customer. Same for a shit ton of other variants.

The word Marketing is just too large... in fact, marketing is all around us, goes from the way we dress, the way we speak to the colors of the buildings around us and pretty much all of the elements that have been artificially created.

Nice read anyways.

I feel like you can define marketer any way you want.. but in the real world, a marketer needs to think about sales/conversion rates/closing the deal.

I dunno, Im from the US and if someone says to me "I am in Marketing" and another "I am in Sales" I understand that they are 2 different things. Now that said some people 'think" they are in marketing when they are really in Sales.

THis was a good quick read. THanks for posting it.

I would agree witht he idea that marketers ar both sales and promotions. However, I don't agree with the righter, that it's jsut "SELL a PRODUCT". I think he's just trying to be controversial for his blog.

I was in telemarketing too, and I never thought I would EVER be there. I was like OH hellz no! I'm no bottom feeder. Truth was, I really enjoyed it. it was EDU, and low pressure. I killed it too. Loved the commissions I was getting.

Long story short. I liked the read. However, I don't think anything has changed. people still need to sell and promote products and services. We just do it differently. The only think that has changed it the vehicle. Now it's multi media via internet. before that it was the phone. before that it was direct mail. these all still work, but have lost their effectiveness. that's why we are here. looking for that edge. :)

That's just my thought.
