Just watched a interesting video on moz, Rand speaks about focusing on topics or specific keywords. What do you do/what would you do?

Would you make a page for each keyword?

Would you make a page targeting a broad topic relating to that keyword?

Would you do a mixture of both?

This will be very useful for me as I am in the process of starting a ecommerce store. Thank you!:cheerlead

Well I think it depends on your products. If you start out with a small website I Would suggest to make a page for each keyword as it's easier to get results. The more specific you optimize, the easier it will be to get top positions.

If you have a lot of products I would go for a mixture of both.

I like to do layers depending on how many subniches a product fits in like you would make a page targeting Weight Loss >> Stimulant Weight Loss Products >> Stimburn Diet Pills. If you have lots of products in the main categories and sub categories the cross and internal linking adds up to good network internal seo and rankings. Far too many stores dont place content on their category and sub category pages

Don't make a page for each keyword... that will look weird... do target one keyword per page though.

    1. Have one target keyword for each page...this will look natural. Meta keyword is great for keeping track of that.
    2. Don't conjoin categories. Don't have a "Shoes & Sandals" category. Break it out into "Women's Shoes","Men's Shoes","Men's Sandals","Women's Sandals", etc.
    3. Use rel next/prev on category pagination so all of a category's pages rank as a cluster.
    4. Use canonical URLs on every page. Be strict and consistent with URL formatting everywhere.
    5. 410 Error on products you never intend to sell again. This allows products you do have to rank instead.
    6. Submit a sitemap for each type of page. This means a separate sitemap for product pages, category pages, support pages, blog pages etc. This lets GWT show you if a type of page is having indexing issues.
    7. Be smart with colors... If it is a Lime Green Sweater don't call the color Fiesta Lime. Call it the color most people will use to search for it.
    8. Consider using product names like amazon. Those property rich product titles feature the key attributes people search for.
    9. Unique title and meta description on every page no matter what including pagination pages
    10. Schema markup everything that can be legitimately marked up and do it correctly the first time. Actually read the specification completely.
    11. Have customer reviews. Those star ratings in the SERPs are pure click bait
    12. Use your blog for editorial marketing... gift guides, product reviews, about the artisan, did you know, how to's (these blog posts are how you succeed in social marketing BTW)
    13. Check that your target keywords actually have traffic. Then visit each keyword in the SERPs and ask yourself honestly if the people looking for the target product are actually visiting this page to find it.
    14. Set up e-commerce tracking in Google Analytics and create custom reports for tracking SEO revenue by source / medium. Dont forget to track syndicated search, safe search, and search categorized as referral or you will be missing 25% of your SEO revenue.
    15. Check for your domains and IPs on internet blacklists and get it fixed if you appear on them
    16. Once you get everything dialed in NEVER EVER CHANGE YOUR URL STRUCTURE... just do it right the first time and be very strict about it.
    17. If you are doing marketing right (for general online retail) social should kick SEO's butt. You want this to happen so you aren't at google's mercy. Historically they will fuck you up from time to time and you need to weather those storms.
    18. Supplemental Content is King for store pages. Search, Sorts & Filters, Similar and Recommended products, Reviews, Categories and Breadcrumbs, Promotions, etc.
    19. Have the responsibility pages... privacy, terms, customer support, return policy, address, phone number, email, about the owners, hours of operation.
    20. Don't give up... If you can just survive the first 3 years your store will probably do pretty well. Burn out is your biggest threat and Google knows it. Thats why new websites don't get credit for backlinks until they are about 6-10 months old. SEO doesn't have much effect until you reach this milestone (the social marketing kicks in right away so put early focus there)
