This journey was inspired by legendary zen19's topic "40million in 10,000 Hours". I think that I've picked up the idea. Moreover, I believe it's possible and see how it's possible to build such system. Though I have almost no experience in IM or email marketing, I am rather familiar with classic marketing. English is my second language, which may or may not make things harder.

My approach will be slightly different than that of zen19, because I firmly believe that most of great things are done by teams. Also, I have no budget to start with (may be, 200-300 eur per month at most), so this will be a tricky part.

On Thursday I spent few hours explaining the system to potential team members. They are both Java programmers. One specializes in low-level java toolkit development and has experience in webdev, another in webdev and large-scale Oracle databases. Both have 4+ year experience. They felt interested right off the bat, but started understanding the system only after today's meeting. As for my background, I am project manager with 6 years experience in advertising and marketing field.

On Friday, using some other connections, I met with a guy, who is building a global scale web portal. He's planning to sell around 350k units of his digital subscription-type product during this year, so he might be possibly interested in buying something akin hubspot but customized to his needs. More important, he has got a budget for this kind of things. So, I am crossing fingers and doing best to seal the deal with him, it would help a lot on the way to building own system.

    Some tech. details for geeks:
We will build most of the system using Java
Some parts like templates will be built using PHP
PostgreSQL will be used for database with possible switch to Oracle if we meet some tech. constraint in Postgre
We will possibly outsource templates and minor stuff.

Sure, it's possible to make it on PHP+MySQL, but we want to make it scalable right from the start.

We will track our dev/research/brainstorm/testing time. Say, we have 10000 hours per team member excl. outsourced jobs to meet our goal.

Conceive, Plan, Develop, Test, Launch, Measure, (Optimize, Measure, Scale), Rinse, Repeat. Nice motto.

By now we have developed both business and product models of what we call "the big marketing roaster" :)

    Estimated raw development time is:
180 hours for 'proof of concept' version
204 hours for minimal working version, which is only half-automated but suitable for running A/B tests
328 hours for full version, which is almost fully automated

Of course, these are raw numbers and based on our experience should be multiplied by 1,5-2,5

    Stats so far:
    Planning time: 18h
    Development time: 0h
    Testing time: 0h

Come on, guys. Zen19 gave out a brilliant system. If you believe it's hard or impossible, it indeed will be impossible for you.

Meanwhile, our 15-page offer got ready and sent to the potential client. Total project cost estimate is 1mil eur/year. We'll have a meeting with him tomorrow.

Something is wrong with my browser because the image won't load. I've been waiting for 3 hours and I even called my ISP.

I'm joking of course, but I don't like highlighting stuff to read it. Regardless OP, good luck on your journey.

Good news, we have raised some funds for this project :) It was the tricky part, as I told here before.
I won't showcase the number here but it will be enough to:

    - pay ~600 hours of webdev
    - get approx. 65k highly targeted unique visitors for performing A/B tests
    - spend ~600 hours testing and refining things
    - pay all necessary 3rd party services like cloud hosting, mailers, template outsourcing etc

This is the first stage, which will be performed in 8 months time span starting shortly. In case of success, we will get like 10x more money for traffic, mailers etc.

    Stats so far:
    Planning & research time: 27h
    Development time: 0h
    Testing time: 0h

    yeah, I fully am :)

Dude, do you have time for a Journey thread?
Surely to reach your goal, your time could be better utilised.

Awesome stuff! I did want to give this system a try but I do not have enough confidence in my coding abilities to see the whole project through to the end. Good luck with your project and I will definitely be following along. Make sure you keep the thread updated with the progress!
