I got a phone call from a local number, so I picked it up, said hello. I immediately get a recorded voice message:

"Hello, this is Sherry, listings agent for Google, Yahoo and Bing. I'm contacting you regarding your business. There is something wrong with your domain. We need to speak to the business owner immediately. Please press 1 to connect to an agent now."

Knowing this is a scam, I pressed 1. I talked to a guy named Andy. I pretended to be scared that something was wrong with my business, and he proceeded to launch into scare tactics like I have never seen before.

Sufficed to say it all boils down to this guy trying to sell me links in Google, Yahoo and Bing. So apparently if I don't list my business in these search engines, customers won't know that I'm legitimate and they will never buy from me. Also it is now a requirement to be listed on these three major search engines. It's against the law to not have a business listed in these search engines, but for $500 they will submit my link so that I can avoid being reported and go to jail.

    What the hell.

I finally quit playing with him when he said "We will report you ma'am." I responded politely with "Go right ahead. I know for a fact I am not going to jail. I also know that I'm listed on the Do Not Call Registry. I don't know how you got this number, but thanks for staying on the phone with me for so long. I've traced this call. I know who owns this number. Now I'm going to go talk to my lawyer about suing someone for attempting to defraud me."

    He hung up.

After that I Googled the number. Turns out it's owned by someone in my state, and it's got hundreds of complaints against it for the exact same thing.

    Freaking scammers man.

Get a picture of a C5 Corvette and set up an ad on a classifieds website with his phone number that says he's giving away used cars that run for only $250.

That'll keep his phone line busy for a while.

I would but when you call the phone number back it just asks if you want to be put on the do not call list. There's no way to talk to a real person.

I was actually going to set up an ad in the paper for male massages and use the number.

Depending where you live, if you are on the 'Do Not Call' list and they still call you, you are able to sue and make $$$. So, I would seriously consider contacting a lawyer about this. You never know.

He's also using a RoboDialer as well which is illegal. Where I live, businesses can be fined up to $10,000 for using a RoboDialer.

These people are so dodgy. I remember seeing somewhere a voice recording of one of these scammers trying to fool someone who worked in SEO. Is this in the U.S?

Yes. According to the complaints against the number I found on Google, they call anyone with a phone number using the exact same message. Most of the people they call don't even have businesses.

I did file a complaint. Monday morning I'm going to talk to my mom's boss, who is a lawyer, and see what can be done about it. I'm not going to hold my breath though. You're right - these people are extremely dodgy.
