Do they even have any value backlink wise? And does google even count them as backlinks if the url is not hyperlinked?

No one knows. If it's not hyperlinked some people still think it has value.
Though I think Yahoo Q&A is hyperlinked, but I believe it's no follow.
Again some think no follow have no value, while some think it does.
More importantly you should be aiming for the traffic from the Q&A rather than the link value.

Yea I know but I'm mostly scared of getting a penalization since I'm using BuzzBundle and getting loads of contextual backlinks. (loads 10-15 daily)

The links are generally no-follow, but but I often see do follow links from YA.

I don't see them for backlinks anymore, but the quality traffic that comes with it helps with a lot conversions.

You are too new to consider any backlinking... let that slide for a while.
In IM we are building Rome and Rome was not built in a day so slow your backlinking roll.
Agree to an extent, they were the best social traffic on the big g a fews years back now they don't rank so well.

Search engines will se this as you participating in your niche online. Unless you just go absolutely nuts or link from questions not related to your niche, they will not hurt.
