Do you think a .xyz domain can be trustworthy? I registered one, because there was a promotion to get them for just $1 and now I'd like to use it for my web design portfolio website, but am not sure if that's a good idea.

If you saw a website that had a link like e.g. "Designed by www.DesignServices.xyz" in the footer, would you click on it?

BTW, I'm not going to promote this website with SEO or PPC, I have a .com for these methods, but for the footer links of my clients' sites I want to use a different website.

If you can't invest $10 into a .com domain, you can't consider it a legit business.
That's a cheap move. And that's how I would consider it if i saw it in an address.

Well, Google looks legitimate enough to me ( https://abc.xyz/ ).

Interesting fact . Google also bought abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com a month ago. They didn't disclose the amount they paid to previous owner but I am sure it is not a reg fee.

I'm guessing the other reason you got this .xyz domain is because someone already had the .com. net and org?
Since you only spent a dollar I would go back to the drawing board and come up with a variation on the desired
name you want. It's gonna take a little work, but an .xyz extension (from a branding standpoint) is not worthwhile IMHO.

I cant count how many times I have say here in BHW that .xyz domain is nothing more special that .pizza .club .xxx .porn .gr .com.cy .co.uk ! Just because google register the abc.xyz domain don't means that it will become the next .com right?

Again 80% of the average people don't even know that xyz is a domain ... And even IF it become more popular .. it will take ages!

Another case ... if your brand name is already taken on the most popular ltds then you have like zero chance someone to remember .xyz better than .com / net / org / info ..

You better keep it for mirror site but not for your money website.. don't wast your time and money on this crap domain.

BTW: Google own google.info .. but howmany companies you know with .info ? :D

A lot, but OP wasnt wondering what is the resale value of XYZ domain, he just wanted to see if potential clients will make decisions to hire him (or not) just because he has XYZ domain.

Doesn't matter. One of the biggest news portals in my country is .NET, one of the best known sites in web design niche is .AG domain

As long as you have something better than the rest of the crowd they will go with you. If he asked for resale value, .COM would be an answer, of course.

I say it's possible, altough .com would be better.
I have no idea who and why, but xyz seems to be heavily promoted, I think it'll be more and more popular.

.XYZ will definitely make you look stand out from rest of the world as most of them will be using .com domains so if you can combine a really nice name with that extension and make your website design stand out completely from others, it will definitely provide you a better edge over your competitors!

When people say that you gotta cut costs in your business, they don't mean go get a free domain for your "legit" business.

Not really relevant, .xyz is on discount at $1 (namecheap), .com is discounted at $1 (godaddy).

My god, are you people for real?

If I was looking to make a legitimate business deal, I would lump a .xyz domain website in with a Blogspot subdomain. Worthless garbage.

The fact that a .ag domain ranks where you are could have something to do with geo-specific BS. For example: "
Used largely by companies in German-speaking countries where AG has a special meaning in company names". A .cn is never going to outperform a .com with the same statistics outside of China.

Absolutely. It worked out wonderfully for .co. In fact, I can't make a simple Google search these days without seeing dozens of .co websites popping up everywhere. :\

What in the fuck? I wish you were in my niche.

The problem with this, a large portion of people are still going to end up typing yourdomain.com and forget that it's actually yourdomain.xyz and they will end up either on someone else's website or thinking your site is no longer running when they hit a 404.
