[WTF?] Google wants to rank websites based on facts not links

All I can say about this is : WHAT THE FFF?

The trustworthiness of a web page might help it rise up Google's rankings if the search giant starts to measure quality by facts, not just links

THE internet is stuffed with garbage. Anti-vaccination websites make the front page of Google, and fact-free "news" stories spread like wildfire. Google has devised a fix ? rank websites according to their truthfulness.

Google's search engine currently uses the number of incoming links to a web page as a proxy for quality, determining where it appears in search results. So pages that many other sites link to are ranked higher. This system has brought us the search engine as we know it today, but the downside is that websites full of misinformation can rise up the rankings, if enough people link to them.

A Google research team is adapting that model to measure the trustworthiness of a page, rather than its reputation across the web. Instead of counting incoming links, the system ? which is not yet live ? counts the number of incorrect facts within a page. "A source that has few false facts is considered to be trustworthy," says the team (arxiv.org/abs/1502.03519v1). The score they compute for each page is its Knowledge-Based Trust score.

The software works by tapping into the Knowledge Vault, the vast store of facts that Google has pulled off the internet. Facts the web unanimously agrees on are considered a reasonable proxy for truth. Web pages that contain contradictory information are bumped down the rankings.

There are already lots of apps that try to help internet users unearth the truth. LazyTruth is a browser extension that skims inboxes to weed out the fake or hoax emails that do the rounds. Emergent, a project from the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, New York, pulls in rumours from trashy sites, then verifies or rebuts them by cross-referencing to other sources.

LazyTruth developer Matt Stempeck, now the director of civic media at Microsoft New York, wants to develop software that exports the knowledge found in fact-checking services such as Snopes, PolitiFact and FactCheck.org so that everyone has easy access to them. He says tools like LazyTruth are useful online, but challenging the erroneous beliefs underpinning that information is harder. "How do you correct people's misconceptions? People get very defensive," Stempeck says. "If they're searching for the answer on Google they might be in a much more receptive state."

Google still ranks spun content and cannot distinguish it from normal articles and they think that they will manage to rank websites based of facts? Good luck, Google =))

If a webpage has too many correct facts listed on it, I wonder if Google will come up with some sort of an over-optimization penalty.

Just another way to narrow down people's thoughts into an acceptable point of view. You can't measure truth in a world based on lies. :eviltongu

You are just getting away with it, but that doesn't mean they can't tell the difference. The more noticable (A good thing)
your site is then the more attention you get from Google. Plenty of people acquire manually placed penalties for lousy
    content.

I guess that would put sites like the onion out of business in a hurry. This plan has an awful lot of flaws I can think of.

I know it's going to read only, interesting timing for it.

I'm just saying if they are talking about moving to a fact based system you can already download their facts database that contains 2,716,890,388 facts right now. I'm just saying what do you think they would be using to check the facts against?

Even if it goes read only you will still be able to use it for awhile and hopefully you will still be able to download the whole thing:

"June 30, 2015 - We'll retire the Freebase website and APIs[3] - The last Freebase data dump will remain available, but developers should check out the Wikidata dump[4]"

    https://plus.google.com/109936836907132434202/posts/bu3z2wVqcQc

Regardless of this though you can still get the data from Wikidata anyways (on a lesser scale though).

Seems it will be easier to game this one than using backlinks. Just build an authority site stuffed with facts..:)

Facts the web unanimously agrees on are considered a reasonable proxy for truth. Web pages that contain contradictory information are bumped down the rankings.

Well that handles the religion problem.... Religions world wide will be rioting in the streets over this. Search religion and the only thing you would be able to find is "religion is good for a mans spirit" or something of this nature....

    Comedy? gone... relies on lies...

Science pages will fluctuate wildly... awsome

Still easily controlled by corporations (false info release) I actually focus on facts in all of my articles but i still think this is bs... It is honestly hard to learn anything when all you do is throw out the arguments.

For instance global warming is going to be just thrown out the damn window. All because 1% of the Scientific community has done all they can to publish there voice.... Stupid ....so stupid... i dont like anyone telling me what to believe or understand.. part of the fun is learning it

Add a disclaimer(aka fact) at end of every spun article:

"This article uses content scraped from the web and spun with [Your spinner software name] with intentions to rank this site high in the SERPs"

and the new algorithm will take care of it.
