Seriously? Good thing I have a lot of gmail accounts :)

Why would they need your phone number... It's probably because of all the spammers creating thousands of gmail accounts for g*d knows what.

I just made a few accounts and it didn't ask me for a phone number. Maybe that's there way of blocking people who make too many accounts from one IP address. Maybe you should try to change your IP and see if the same thing happens.

I think it is just for certain catagories you are trying to post under, like electronics, computers..

I just created a new gmail account after reading this post and did NOT have to verify my phone number.
I do hate though how I had to type the captcha 4 times, but that is nothing unusual. I am guessing the OP may have created too many gmail accounts from the same IP..
SweetJesus can you give more details?

Maybe you have send too many spam email from that IP :) JK
but something you have done that are suspicious of being a robot before you registering gmail has triggered that. Google is pretty good at identify such behavior.
So make sure you clear your cookie, or even further, change ip after you did heavy query on google.

its working fine again from the same IP, Hmmm that was weird, I usually run proxies for making accounts so that shouldn't have been the problem. IDK maybe just a fluke or something. I found it really hard to believe google would force phone verification on free email accounts, lol. oh well

I guess its late... your post had me laughing so hard I choked on my tea and shot it out through my nose and on my keyboard.

To the OP.. glad its working for you now. Although I find it interesting they added the ability to PV a gmail account even if it was a "fluke" thing for you... it means that code is still there to happen again.

I second the idea that he was probably posting in electronics or computers. I usually stay away from those then I make gmails...
