If you're going to buy domains instead of registering them yourself you should better look for aged domains instead of domains with a PR. First of all it's quite easy to get yourself a high PR and second of all you will most likely lose your PR once you put a new site on it.

Well, PR depends on links, so even if you use duplicate content but carry out link building, you should get pr. Focus on getting high pr links. Though if you write good content, you can get links naturally (link bait)

For aged domains, godaddy auctions and namepros can be two very good sources. GD auctions has about the biggest inventory, so you can find some decent deals there, though it is competitive cuz there's so many eyeballs on them. Namepros can be nice cuz it's one-on-one transactions.

For research, start by checking alexa, archive dot org, xinureturns dot com, and just run the name thru the big search engines to see what its history looks like. That should give you some basic background info.

Run the name thru a few other analysers like cubestat, websiteoutlook, estibot just for kicks. Might find something interesting there though their numbers can be screwy.

    peace,
    gregs.

Just to expand on what was said earlier, I wouldn't go after names just because of PR. I usually look for domains that have:

    1 - backlinks - lots of them
    2 - age
3 - a niche or history I can capitalize on

One of my best sites used to be a forum for users of a certain model of a certain company's piece of equipment. It had a ton of backlinks from authority sites, it was several years old, and I knew enough about the niche that I could build out a site that visitors coming from those backlinks would find interesting.

I don't recall its PR when I got it (I'm thinking it might even have been de-indexed for lack of updates), but I've built it up to PR3 by refreshing its content and getting the visitors to make it active by commenting on the forums.

Always check that the PR is real. It's quite easy to fake with a 301 redirect, and a lot of those auctions have domains with fake PR.

I agree with others. Look for aged domains with backlinks from varying sources.
