It seems like Thesis and some of the other wp frameworks use
    <h1 id=tagline">XXX</h1> by default.

Is it really good practice to make your tagline a h1, especially since they hide it?

    ( yes.. I suck at WP, I know :p )

Use what exactly. This appears to be the code for displaying the tagline you input in word press settings somewhere as a heading. It's pretty common. Not sure what your asking.
