Should I have comments turned on?

Or would this cause too much spam?

I would leave them on. I actually get real comments on some of my blogs.

Also, I use WP-SpamFree (with a little bit of my zesty mod for uniqueness) which kills comment spam.

Problem I run into on some of my lower-key blogs is that my linkcurl plugin sometimes leaves pingbacks at my own blog...

I'd leave them on. I'd also enable nofollow though, so you don't leak PR.

Comments in a blog are a indication of good heath

I'm starting a blog, and I was thinking how could make it full of real comments (or something that look like real), and you're thinking about closing them hehe

My 2 cents: don't close comments, and don't make them nofollow. Take all precautions to avoid spam, like askimet or WP-SpamFree, but encourage your visitors to comment. Even make a lot of comments yourself (with differents name ;))

PS: Think about how many times did you make a comment in a post without comments, and how many time in posts with another comments

the 'comment luv' plugin is interesting to use if you want to develop a blog where a the content is helped out from people posting comments. it will track back to their blog and pull up a post from their feed to put into their ID.

you can check it out at WP-org here
